Shortcut

Mexico Hwy 2 out of Del Rio, TX

I have a Rand McNally Trip Maker program and when I put in my trip from Seattle to SMA it uses a border crossing in Del Rio, TX and then Mexico Federal Hwy 2 to Nuevo Laredo. I wonder if anyone has used this route driving?
Also, my map doesn't show much detail getting around Monterrey. Are the bypasses well marked changing from Hwy 85 to Hwy 40 and then to Hwy 57?

I found Del Rio/Cd Acuña to be a good place to cross. The traffic is light enough that getting through was a low-stress process.
However, I didn't go through Nuevo Laredo or Monterrey. Instead, I went through Monclova. This was 3 years ago. The roads were fine and I don't remember getting lost. There aren't a lot of gas stations north of Monclova, but you'll have a full tank when you cross anyway.
What I remember about Monterrey (different trip)is that the bypass is an honest-to-gosh highway and is marked clearly.

Coming from Seatle, will you be passing through El Paso? If so, you might consider crossing there and taking the Chihuahua, Torreon, Zacatecas, Potosi, SMA route, depending on how much driving you want to do in Mexico. If you want to stay on US interstates as long as possible, which isn't a bad idea if you're short on time, I'd go on over to San Antone and turn south to Laredo. Just north of Monterrey, the signs point very clearly toward Saltillo. You don't have to go into Monterrey proper. Turn south at Saltillo and Hwy 57 will take you all the way to the San Miguel turnoff
The last trip we took, about 2 years ago, there were a lot more toll roads and you could make really good time if you're in a hurry. The tolls were expensive by my standards though. On the way back, the last day from Potosi to Laredo, I spent about $50 US on tolls. However, in the old days on the old roads, I probably wouldn't have tried that stretch in one day.
: I have a Rand McNally Trip Maker program and when I put in my trip from Seattle to SMA it uses a border crossing in Del Rio, TX and then Mexico Federal Hwy 2 to Nuevo Laredo.
