Anybody made this trip by private auto? If so, what's the best route?

We are going to deviate from our usual route this year and go to Xalapa for a day or two in Feb. We now take 101 to outside of Cuidad Victoria, to 70 to 83, to 247 then hook back up w/ 180 outside of Manuel & follow it through Tampico & down the coast. We plan to take 129 to 140 to Xalapa. Have you been there before? I was going to post to see if anyone can recommend a decent hotel that we can stay at w/ our dog. Please let me know if you have any ideas. Let me know if you need more detailed directions to get down the coast. We've been making this trip every year since 1988, so we've got it down pretty well now thats why we want to see something new like Xalapa.<p>

Victoria is complete. You can now drive from 85 (just north of Cd V) to Tampico in a more or less straight route. Good road, little traffic until you get near Tampico. In Tampico try the
Hotel Plaza (there are 2 others in the same block)
Mex 180 down the coast is fair/good. Surface is deeply rutted from overloaded trucks.
Stop at Papatanla and visit the ruins at El Tajin, if you have not already done so. Take
Mex 129 from 180 to Tlapacoyan, then on to Perote.
Perote is well known for it's serano style hams
which are tasty but expensive by US standards.
From Perote south on Mex 140 to Xalapa. The museum is on this side of town so stop before going to the downtown area of Xalapa or be prepared to back track.

Hi Scott, we spent Christmas in Coatepec, just outside of Xalapa. Beautiful area. I strongly recommend a visit to Xico to see the falls, and to eat at the Meson Xiqueno -- incredible Mole Cazuela. If you visit El Tajin and Papantla, take the coast road south of there. The back roads to Xalapa are almost impassable. There are bandits in some backwater spots, too. The coast road is in good shape. El Tajin and Papantla were both really beautiful.
