Greetings everyone! I will be driving to Guanajuato (my 2nd trip) in the middle of January or the 1st of February and will be entering at Nuevo Laredo. I have been told that there are long delays at Customs and I was wondering what would be the best times, hour/day, to enter. I am fairly flexible with my time so I could do what is best indicated.
What about entering at Matamoras? How are the roads to San Luis Potosi? What would be the difference in driving time versus Nuevo Laredo?
I would like to spend a day or two in Dolores Hidalgo and would like to know if there is a good, fairly reasonable, place to stay. Also, any information on tours, i.e., cost and location, would be appreciated. Thanks, David

We have found little or no delay in crossing at Laredo. I choose to cross early in the morning, not because of border delays, but to maximize my driving time in Mexico.
The road to San Luis Potasi (from Laredo) is largely toll road and quite good. That which is not toll road is four lane.
You would be pushing it to plan to make Potasi from Laredo in one day. Plan to spend the night at Matahuela.

Warren, thanks for your input. I likely will spend the night in Matehuala. By early in the morning do you mean something like 6am? DAvid

From Nvo. Laredo, you can certainly make Guanajuato in a day. Morelia is more distant, and I make it in 11 hours, max.
The border crossing at Nvo. Laredo is 24 hours, and 3 a.m. is not an unreasonable time to cross.

Yes, there are reasonable accomodations in Dolores Hidalgo.

You don't mention where you are coming from or what you are driving so that could make a difference.
We just returned from Thanksgiving in Austin, TX and came by way of the Solidarity Bridge in Columbia... just NW of Laredo. It adds a few miles and saves driving through the 2 cities. Being in a motorhome it is more convenient.
It is 436 miles from the crossing to GTO and the vast majority is on 4 lane highway. If you were to cross at dawn, there should be no trouble to make the drive in daylight... especially if you plan to stay in Dolores Hidalgo. That last stretch between Dolores to Santa Rosa and to GTO is best done in daylight.
Another tip. Leave Highway 57 at the turnoff to San Diego de la Union and follow the signage to Dolores. While it is narrow, the road is straight and has little traffic. The other option, turning off at the San Luis exit, has much more traffic and the road is in poor condition.
Welcome back to our beautiful city.
Linn

Oops. My math is off. The distance from the border to GTO is 570 miles. Still doable with an early start.
