Numbers/Dates

I have been told, by Mexican GF, that when referencing money you can say the number much as we do in English.

Thysly:

Either veintitres cientos or dos mil trescientos is correct and understood for $2300.

Now my question is this is really true? If so, how come nobody understands me when I use the first version. My GF says it is perfectly correct and she understands me. Of course she understands a lot mroe of my Spanish than the rest of Mexico does.

She also says that it is not proper to use the first version when stating dates. That is always dos mil xxxxxx for example.

I may be wrong, but have never heard the first version in over 20 years working and living in Latin America. In English, either version, of course is common to be interchanged.

I agree with the GF (girl friend? good friend? good find?gal friend?gay friend?grammar fiend?)whatever that is.
