Presidio, Texas border crossing

My wife and I are moving to San Miguel de Allende from Colorado and will be driving a surburan pulling a small trailer with our clothes and personal items, and our three pups in the car.
To get around the huge crowds and congestion at Laredo we were thinking of crossing at Presidio..then down to Chihuahua hit 45 down to Torreon over to Monterrey to 57 on down to SMA.
We have never driven in Mexico but have been just across the border at Presidio and thought it might be less hassel to cross there.
Any thoughts and suggestions on the crossing and route would be greatly appreciated.

Paul,
A picturesque crossing but you will be driving in some hilly country on two lane roads plus you will be backtracking.
If the idea of Laredo is of concern to you (which it shouldn't be--no crowds that I am aware of) consider the Columbia crossing (I-35 offramp about 10 miles north of Laredo). There is a (Texas) toll road right to the crossing and all the facilities are rather new.
If you are coming down I-25 to I-10 you could also consider crossing just before El Paso rejoining Mexico 45 just south of Ciudad Juarez.

I go thru Roma - smaller and less congested. Get good insurance(Lewis and Lewis form Ca are great 800-966-6830) Annual policy cheaper than shorter time.
The roads are good from Texas to SMA. I live in SW Nebraska and will be going mid Jan
Where in Colorado??? I have "heard" to go thru Monterrey, Saltillo and avoid Chihuahua(sp) Not sure why; just lonelier roads.
Most of my travels are north and south for the past 22 years. They say major east to west vice versa
too uninhabited and druggie prone for real safe travel.
It is alot of hearsay-like boyscouts - be prepared!
Where are you moving to in SMA? Do you need more info on docs, pets travel etc?? Let me know madisonmarie@mexconnect.com

: My wife and I are moving to San Miguel de Allende from Colorado and will be driving a surburan pulling a small trailer with our clothes and personal items, and our three pups in the car.

I've lived in Presidio for 14 years. I also travel into the interior of Mexico two or three times a year.
Presidio's crossing is open 24 hours, there's insurance for sale on both sides of the border, and getting your paperwork in Ojinaga is a breeze (holidays excepted).
If you are headed south, go on the road towards Camargo. It is in great condition and is not hilly or curvy. When you reach Hwy. 45, you can either take the free road (very decent condition) or the toll road.
Presidio-Camargo is a very lightly travelled route, and no gas. Otherwise, a quick and safe route.
