9,000 miles from Laredo to Cancun to Tapachula to Puerto Vallarta to Chapala

My wife and I just finished driving this route. We stayed on the toll roads where ever we could. With the exception of the route from Tampico to Veracruz. Here, we got off the main highway a took Hwy 127. Which I would not recommend.
From Veracruz to Merida we stayed along the Gulf.
I will be posting posting an in depth report of road conditions and so on as soon as we dictate or tape recordings of the trip. In the meantime if anyone has questions about the Gulf or Border routes please feel free to ask. You can reach me at my above email address.
Wanderer
Wanderer@mexconnect.com

Route 180

The best drive I was ever on was Route 180 after leaving Villahermosa to Merida. You go through a lake region and then along the coast which for many miles has only a few very small hotels and no houses. There are miles and miles of uninhabited beaches. We were driving the area on New Years day and hardly saw a car in 200 except when going through the towns.
On that trip, we entered Laredo, but have entered at Brownsville. Laredo for us is easier coming down from Illinois. I also am looking forward to the Wanderers' account. We are leaving Thursday for central mexico to the pacific coast. The last time, the entire trip was way too much driving, but a wonderful experience. I only wish it was posted before I left.

We just finished driving from Pharr, TX to Akumal, Quintana Roo. We had a deadline to be here and didn't stop for side trips. It was 4 days of driving mostly from 9am to 6pm, taking the cuotas where possible and bypassing all the large cities we could (Tampico, Vera Cruz, Villahermosa, Campeche, Merida, Cancun). We drove until 9:30 the last night but it was familiar and good road from Merida to Akumal. We were in a 26ft Rv towing a jeep. The roads were pretty OK, not so great in VeraCruz and Tabasco but not a problem. We also took the gulf route from Villahermosa through Ciudad del Carmen and Campeche. It was very pretty, beautiful empty beaches and good 2 lane road. We drove it on Christmas day, very light traffic.
I thought that the crossing at Pharr was the easiest I've done. The turn to catch the 97 down to the 101 is hard to see, you have to make a u turn before Reynosa. Once you get that it is a straight shot to the aduana and Ciudad Victoria.
JH
