Best of Lent

Now that the forty days of penance are upon us, what are your favorite Lenten foods in Mexico? Well, since fish is pretty much a given, what else? Last Friday at lunch with a vegetarian friend, I'd mentioned what a great idea lentil albondigas were, wondering why dishes like that weren't available here all year around. My friend replied that most folks considered lentil albondigas punishment food. Now that I mention it, the Lenten favorite capirotada strikes me as punishment food. What works for you?

Every year at this time I love to go to a cocina economica (Buen Sazon de Mi Cocina) where they make chiles rellenos with squash, corn and whatever inside, and cover them with a rich cream/cheese sauce. They are not battered and fried, just stuffed roasted chiles with excellent filling and that sauce! Oh, yum.

Atole de grano is a good supper choice, any time of the year.
Eggs, beans and rice are always available and can be prepared tastily.
We had a pozole de habas y maíz the other evening. It looked pretty grim, but had a nice, earthy, satisfying taste. Not to get excited and make it all year, though!
