Jamming of Satellite TV Signals

Due to a failure to back up my hard drive, you'll have to wait until the March 3 issue for the article on the upcoming jamming of your satellite TV signals starting on March 8 here in Central Mexico.

Since there was no Tech Talk column in the March 3 GR, could Pete (or someone) please explain what this little bombshell means?

Which satellite signals are being jammed? By whom? And why?

I sent the story in on time but to an old email address, the editors did not find the article until it was too late. My fault. The article will be printed Friday. The jamming starts today for maybe five minutes sometime between 1 & 2 PM PM or so if you are pointing your sat dish at the DISH Network or Star Choice.

The length of the Jamming will be longer tomorrow. To learn more read Friday's article. ( It had better be in there Smile )

We're talking the annual solar flares right Pete? The sun is doing the jamming.

Please tell us. Our signal is gone and I'm in a total sweat. Is it the end of civilization as we know it or will we have TV again in our lifetimes?

If your signal is not working right now, then you have problems other than what I was writing about. On Friday you will be down for only about 10 minutes, on Saturday more, on Sunday more. The US and Canadian governments are aware of this jamming effort and will be taking no action to stop it.

My editor asked that I not mention who will be jamming the signal until the paper has been distributed Friday afternoon. Sorry about that.

Jamming:

deliberate radiation or reflection of electromagnetic energy for the purpose of disrupting enemy use of electronic devices or systems.

So the "Who" could be a "Son " but not a "Sun".

Spoil Sport! (and isn't that censorship?) Bet it's the Chinese, taking pot shots at a few more satellites...

Several weeks ago, I mentioned an upcoming article about signals to our satellite feeds being jammed. I didn't mean to scare everyone, but somehow rumors started and folks began to believe the worst, especially those who are stealing their signals. It was never my intent to scare the folks, but before you knew it, people began to believe the worst. And of course I didn't help this any when i pointed out that the US and Canada knew of this jamming and were going to do nothing about it.

Every spring and fall at this time the satellite dealers are driven mad by fearful or angry clients whose satellite systems fail for periods up to 30 minutes. Why do they fail? Because for a few days in the spring and a few days in the fall, the sun will get directly behind that satellite your satellite dish is pointing at. And the sun submits stronger radio waves than does the satellite your dish is pointing at. So your satellite signals are overwhelmed and you loose your signal until the sun moves on some 5 to 30 minutes later. The sun gets behind those Star Choice and DISH satellites located at 107.3, 110, 111.1, & 119 West early in the afternoon. You have about another week of this. afterwards when the sun passes by the satellite you are pointing at, the sun will be higher. In the winter the sun will be lower as it moves from E to W. However the sun will get exactly behind your satellites again in Oct.

So yes there will be satellite delivery interruptions, and yes the US and Canadian Governments are aware of this, and no neither government will attempt to stop the sun jamming our signals for up to 30 minutes per day at its worst for a period of up to 9 days were on the first and last day, the interruption will only be about 5 minutes, and as mentioned above on the middle or worst day the jamming will last almost 30 minutes.

"The farther north you go, the earlier this interference occurs in the spring and the later in the fall. In Winnipeg, for example, which is about 50 degrees North latitude, the solar outages take place about ten days earlier in the spring and ten days later during the fall"

Sorry if I scared some of you.

With all due respect, don't you think that the rumours were fuelled by statements of your own such as:

Quote
The US and Canadian governments are aware of this jamming effort and will be taking no action to stop it.

and

Quote
My editor asked that I not mention who will be jamming the signal until the paper has been distributed Friday afternoon

I was one of those who were very concerned about losing a service I really enjoy, and I am not stealing my signal.

When I posted the original question (based on your own published statements) on a technical forum, I expected a forthright and honest answer. I feel that this whole tempest in a teapot has been somewhat disingenuous. This is, of course, just my opinion.

What's the 10 meter band and what is on it? When I googled it all I got was a bunch of stuff about amateur radio. What's that got to do with satellite TV?

I'm a ham operator (KD7ION) and I think Ron was just teasing me. Sadly there aren't that many active hams down here. I've still got my 2 meter gear (good for line of site and not much farther). But with the advent of cell phones and VoIP, there just isn't much ham activity here any more.

And I'm sorry my sense of humor offended you, Mr. Musgrave. That's why I wrote above
"Several weeks ago, I mentioned an upcoming article about signals to our satellite feeds being jammed. So Huitzilopochtli gets the blame for Jamming, which is the deliberate radiation or reflection of electromagnetic energy for the purpose of disrupting enemy use of electronic devices or systems.

So that would make the foreign receivers of foreign signals the enemy Eh.

Does that mean that starchoice is the choice of the other stars, technically speaking?

You have my sympathy Pete. You went from hero to pariah in one week. Fueled by people without much knowledge, and no sense of humor.

It validates my own decision a few years ago, to forget about trying to bring American TV shows with me to México. Mexican cable TV with 5 or 6 channels in English is enough for me. My life never has centered around a TV set anyway.

Thanks Rex. I suppose I should never kid around, but I just couldn't resist.

You know, I don't watch that much TV either. I admit I have it on in the background even right now as I type this. (I am playing a radio station I receive from Star Choice over the TV) You know, it's weird Rex, I bet I can pick up more than 1000 channels. I have FTA, DISH, Star Choice, local cable and digital C band. And for some stupid reason, it's important for me to be able to pick up all of those channels. Yet I usually ONLY watch the network channels from, Seattle, Vancouver, and Victoria, the same stations I watch or listen to when I head back to that area, each time the sun comes out up there, all of which are on Star Choice. (Oh, and occasionally I watch the Guadalajara news on local cable.)

Right now I am listening to the same radio station I often listen to up North on my Star Choice receiver, CIOC, "the Ocean" from Victoria, BC. That's not too far from where the territory of ARBONlandia is. Oops, there I go kidding around again

I don't know about that having anything to do with the electronic definition of "Jamming", but I had thought that Bubba has the advantage of only drinking bottled water, where as I have to drink water from a lake.

In Paradise you get Sun spots, here frost bite, and "Jamming" happens here if the fruit gets ripe.
