I've been looking at the lyrics for some mariachi songs, there's an excellent site here.

The song La Ley de Monte contains the line En nuestro idiíio las pencas hablan

In the first verse he says he has carved their names on the penca of a maguay cactus as proof by the law of the mountain they are lovers. Now she's changing her mind and thus the above line.

I can't find a translation for penca or idiío I can guess what they must mean, probably the branches or arms of the cactus and idiom, but I'm curious about the actual meaning and if it is idiomatic or regular spanish.

At the end, the new pencas on the cactus also have their names.

Yes, the pencas are the "leaves" of the maguey, as is clear from the first of the following definitions in the Spanish Royal Academy's dictionary: (extract follows)

penca.
(De or. inc.).
1. f. Hoja, o tallo en forma de hoja, craso o carnoso, de algunas plantas, como el nopal y la pita.
2. f. Nervio principal y pecíolo de las hojas de ciertas plantas, como la acelga, el cardo, la lechuga, etc.
3. f. Troncho o tallo de ciertas hortalizas.
4. f. Tira de cuero o vaqueta con que el verdugo azotaba a los delincuentes.
5. f. maslo (‖ tronco de la cola de los cuadrúpedos).
6. f. Cuba. paipay.

Thank you Jerezano, and Tony.

I cut and pasted that so the errors were already there but I didn't realize it. idílio that makes sense and no wonder I couldn't find the other word. I don't know why my various dictionaries didn't have penca.
