End of analog broadcast TV in USA approaches

Can't Post | Private Reply
Today is the day when every new television set shipped for sale in the United States must have a digital tuner.
Big deal? You bet, and it's about time. In just 718 days (Feb. 17, 2009,) every existing analog TV set that receives signals through an antenna will go dark unless it's hooked up to a converter box....

or if connected via cable to a provider that continues the analog signal transmission.

How long before Mexico and the rest of the world will do likewise ?

Are there many 'analog only' tv sets left in the USA, Mexico, or the rest of the world?

What! Could you kindly elaborate on this for us? Do people in the USA know that today's the day?

Yes, we know todays the day, but analog sets are very much in evidence in the stores up here and will continue to be. This was to have happened in 2004, but there was so much sass from the people that it was put off till 09. Doubt it will be "enforced" any time soon though as there are millions of sets that have 10 to 20 (planned obsolescence) years of life left. Cable TV signals will be available in Hi Def and Analog for years to come.....
Getting older and still not down here.

It is any TV that crosses State lines, but it may only be? for TVs with 36 inch diagonal and larger screens?

It is not supposed to become a problem (in the future) for any one on cable or satellite.

As I recollect, soon the TV stations will be broadcasting these digital signals on new frequencies in the US and that the old frequencies, will be given up to be used for other things. I also read that if you get your signals via rabbit ears or a rooftop antenna, you wont be able to use that old fashioned analog TV anymore, regardless of what size it its, unless you buy a converter box

There is a real advantage to digital TV. It takes up appreciably less bandwidth to send a digital signal than an analog one. For example on C Band satellite, where there was one analog channel, there are now 8 different digital ones taking up exactly the same bandwidth as the old analog one.

All I can say, it's about time. For more info, you can always check out articles like the following one written back in 2005.

You are asking very hard questions, Nacho. if I were a betting man, I would guess, about 2015. Whatever the day it will be a long time in the future.
