Tonala on a Sunday? Cheap prices?

Can't Post |
I hope to do some shopping while I am iin Guadalajara in late October. I have heard that Tonala is one of the best places to shop in the interior of Mexico. I also heard it's best to go on a Sunday or Thursday while the market is one. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I always take guests to Tonala on tianguis day (market day). Besides the great buys (which you can get in the shops there any time, by the way) it is a beehive of activity and craftsmanship.
Here's what is a good buy in Tonala: glass items, pottery, dishes, wood bark paintings, painted ceramics, carved furniture, painted furniture.
In the market stands you can buy ANYTHING but I'm not sure if it's any cheaper than at the tianguis in other communities: the same stands travel from town to town.
I do know that many of the items I have purchased in Tonala I have found at higher prices elsewhere.
: I hope to do some shopping while I am iin Guadalajara in late October. Thanks for the info. Would you suggest I go to Tonala on Saturday or Sunday. We also want to go to Tlaquepaque.
I was hoping to find a wood carved coffee table. Can you recommend a particular vendor?

Well, what you're looking for isn't really a tianguis type item -- although there may be a few tianguis vendors selling such tables as you describe. However, many of the shops carry such tables and it might be easier to get around Tonala on a non-tianguis day. Tonala and Tlaquepaque are just several minutes apart. Why not go to Tonala on a Saturday morning early. If you don't find what you want, you can shop in Tlaquepaque in the afternoon. Prices are higher but the selection is good. (I assume from your other post you are going to stay in Tlaquepaque.) Then, if both forays fail, go to the tianguis on Sunday. Don't miss Sunday evening in Tlaquepaque near the Parian in the square by the churches: it's a delight.
The folks at Quinta don Jose (if you do decide to stay there) can arrange a driver for you to Tonala so you don't have to schlep stuff around on your own. Parking on Sundays is a challenge. Saturday won't be as bad -- if you are driving yourself.
: Thanks for the info. Would you suggest I go to Tonala on Saturday or Sunday.
