LA to Merida...how to avoid D.F.?

We want to go down the West Coast to Guadalajara, then to SMA, Puebla and out to Veracruz.Is there any way to avoid Mexico City? We don't really want to stay in the city overnight. And we'd like to avoid it altogether.Would appreciate any suggestions.

and it's an easy drive through to Cuernavaca. Mexico City is not all that bad if you stay on the main hiways like Periferico Sur.If not there are some back roads shown on this map so you can avoid the city totally. You really just need a good map ... and lots of daylight.

And we'd like to avoid it altogether.: Would appreciate any suggestions.I'm going to agree with 'Loco'...DF isn't that bad, as long as you watch the road signs and KEEP MOVING; but his emphasis on 'daytime' is appropriate. If you are still nervous about it (which is a good thing to be!), the suggestion of Cuernavaca is a very good one: east out of Toluca, then south through La Marquesa, pass the lakes at Zempoala, and there you are. There is a serious problem with this route, however: and that is that it is VERY easy to fall in love with Cuernavaca and never leave it...that is to say, 6 or 7 years ago I was on my way to Veracruz and spent one night here...and then another...and I'm sure you get my drift. Finally got to visit Veracruz, but scurried back to Cuernavaca like a little bunny, don't ever want to live anywhere else in my life. Hope you have a fun trip, whichever way you go...Regards.

I probably will do the same & somewhat different (Q. Roo) destination soon but via TX from SFO. Where abouts in Merida is your house?
