shipping artichokes

Any ideas on how to ship a couple dozen beautiful, organically grown artichokes from Michoacan to Jalisco or Nayarit?

From where, Camille?

You can ship them to me...we'll see if they get forwarded. LOL...I haven't had a good artichoke for quite a while!

Is this akin to shipping coals to Newcastle? At present and often, I buy artichokes at Super Lake in San Antonio Tlayacapan, Jalisco. Organically grown artichokes my butt.

I had the privilege of living in artichoke country in Northern California for many years. Tell me where they grow "organic" artichokes in Michoacan.

Me either, and they're right up there with softshell crabs as far as I'm concerned! I have a friend in Lake Zirahuen who's growing artichokes, but she's never shipped and doesn't know if maybe a fitosan certificate is required, and I'm trying to make this as easy as possible so that she'll continue to ship. Her gardens are gorgeous, and she sells breads and tapenade and a lot of other delicious stuff.... also just had a day-long class in organic gardening in that microclimate with lunch entirely from the garden.

Well, Camille, we often drive by your friendŽs farm on our way to Chiapas, tell us how to get there and weŽll detour to buy her produce.

The most productive places for growing artichokes and brussels sprouts on the Northern California coast are fogbound and cool regions from Castroville to Davenport mostly along Monterey Bay and just north of there. ThatŽs the reason I expressed surprise at hearing tha Michoacan is fecund ground for that sort of crop but then what do I know?.

By the way, artichoke plants are, indeed beautiful, especially if allowed to go to seed. IŽll meet you there for an artichoke boil.

Email Lisa Sheppard at lmsheppard2002@yahoo.com ....Rancho Aqua Zarca is also producing free-range chickens and eggs, geese, and another favorite..... lamb. In the past, Lisa has been persuaded to prepare a Sunday lunch for a small group of lucky persons, and it was so delicious it would only be cruel to tell you what we had......but I can't resist mentioning baby turnips and fresh raspberries.
I have grown artichokes in Houston, and they were very good, but of course California, and, I now see, Michoacan, are more conducive to production of really fine ones.
But I still want shipping info!

Bubba, don't you know that there's an artichoke farm just a few kilometers from your present abode in Ajijic? Want me to take you there? The artichokes are huge, beautiful, round beauties, all grown for export. I've been wondering what it would take to buy a few, for personal consumption only...

Next time I pass by there, I will see what I can find out. So far all I know is I can see them from the road.

Wanna stage a raid?

I'm going that way on Thursday. I'll find out if we can buy some and post back here.

I don't think they're ripe yet, though. I'll find out, I promise.

Lisa is serving Sunday lunch once a month now. It's a spectacular meal, served in her kitchen, and includes whatever is ripe from her garden. The setting is just beautiful, very near Lake Zirahuen, way up in the mountains.
The baby turnips surrounded a roast duck......

Following is a portion of Lisa's e-mail to me re: products from her organic farm. Yes, it is organic and next year they will be able to get an organic certification. I can attest that her food is terrific. We had her smoked pork ribs and biscuits one day last summer on the portico. Yummy.

You can also achieve that intense golden color by mixing in a bit of turmeric in the feed. (Says Bubba who knows nothing about chickens except that they taste better featherless).

I must have this. Down in South Alabama eating among the magnolias, we had to have Tipsy Pudding which was full of sherry and all sorts of good things including fruits and nuts and semolina and made life worth living again for Aunt Maudy for a few hours anyway..

Even if these folks donŽt make good food, IŽll bow to the ghost of MFK Fisher and concede that that is unlikely reflecting upon their poetic descriptive summaries.

Chiapas be damned, IŽll snooze in some God-forsaken Michoacan backwater after a meal like that.

Tell me how to get to this place from Ajijic on a journey along Autopista 15 to DF.

No results yet, unfortunately. When I went past the place yesterday, no one was there. I'll keep trying till we get some of these babies. Don't melt the butter quite yet, though, the artichokes aren't nearly ripe.

Plenty of soft shell crabs in Veracruz!!!!!!!!!!...and am I LOVING IT!!!! Thought I'd die the first time I saw them on a menu....after the first taste, ordered another plate. At 95 pesos for 3, it sure beats $5.00 usd each for the little buggers in a local So. Florida fish market (never mind what they'd cost in a restaurant)

OBTW.....some nice large artichokes would be nice too!!
