Please, a little advise from the Mexican Kitchen!

Our son is a chef, currently living and working in Melbourne Australia.

This year I wanted to plan ahead and get him a unique handcrafted Mexican gift for his birthday.

I have heard of the Ojeda family in the village Sayula, south of Guadalajara's.
They are reputed to be outstanding knife makers for many generations.
But I don't know much more about them than that.

So a few questions before we go to the trouble of driving over from Patzcuaro.
Does anyone on this board have knives from them?
I would love to hear what you think of them.

Any chefs or foodies out there with a recommendation for the right handcrafted knife for a young chef?

I purchased a 6 knife set with a beautiful block for about 1,000 pesos. I'm not not trying to be cute but I recommend a chefs knife. I use mine about 80 % of the time.

I haven't owned them long enough to attest to how they hold up. They must be good for their reputation seems to hold up.

I have several Ojeda knives - they are good, keep an edge and are easy to sharpen when they do dull. My son, the foody in NY, has some we have given him and likes them too.

Go and see the taller. If Don Jose is there and you get talking, he will probably bring out some of the presentation pieces they make there. Kitchen knives are but a part of the things they produce. It'll be worth the trip.
