First post from a newbie:

I've read most of the threads on bringing US-plated vehicles into Mexico, but I didn't see the answers to my questions, so I hope folks will forgive my raising this well-documented issue yet again.

There are two issues that I could use some clarification on.

1. The general sense I got from the posts is that the permit is made out to the registered owner of a vehicle only. Both my wife and I are registered owners of our vehicles - will the permit name both of us?

2. We may want to bring two vehicles into Mexico (transporting 4 dogs + 3 cats argues for 2). We have different last names, but again, at least one of the registrations will name both of us. Will we have a problem?

You have no problems. The person who is the sole owner of one vehicle, gets the permit for that one. The other person gets the permit for the vehicle titled in both names. That permit will be issued in one name.

My husband and I brought two vehicles into Mexico. We had the ownership documents changed before we left Canada to show both of us as joint owners of both vehicles.

Did you and your husband, as Bournemouth suggested, permit one car in each name when you crossed the border or did they allow both names on both permits? I'm hoping that we could each drive either vehicle without the other being present.

It may depend on your insurance company, but as far as the government is concerned, a husband or wife can drive their spouse's car.

We had both names as joint owners on both vehicles. I drove one across the border and my husband drove the other. No problem. I don't think it matters, but we had the car permit with my name showing first followed by my husband's name, and the truck permit with my husband's name first with my name following. Probably didn't make any difference but that's the way we did it.

I understood that as long as you have the same type visa you can drive a foreign car. So, my partner has the RV in her name and I have the jeep in my name but either of us can drive the other. The restrictions are for nationals driving foreign plated cars, they must be a specific relative or have the registered owner in the car. Anyone can drive a national plated car.

Insurance is another matter but for our foreign plated vehicles we are both listed on the insurance policy for each. For the Mexican plated truck, only I am on the insurance policy but my understanding from my insurance agent here in QRoo is that the insurance covers whoever is driving.

Who can and can not drive a foreign plated car is spelled out in Article 106, which also says your sticker is good as long as your visa is valid. You should print it it and carry it with you.

I have a rather different episode to relate. When my wife Susan and I brought our Toyota P/U in through the Nogales entry in 2003, it was registered and titled in both our married names. We both were using our birth certificates and drivers licenses at that time.

The young man at the Aduana decided to put the vehicle in Susan's maiden name only, use her credit card (in our married name) for the fee and leave my name completely off anything regarding the importation of the vehicle. Huh? When we pointed this discrepancy out to him he said we shouldn't worry as it was no big deal. Wanting to pass through with no hassles with our truck full of goodies, we didn't make any fuss.

Sadly, Susan passed away later that year in Mazatlán. So, to this day I'm driving a rig in México registered solely in a deceased persons name.

I carry a copy of her death certificate along with copies of the title and registration and a copy of Article 106 just in case but there's never been a problem - yet.

This is just a heads up to make sure your vehicles are registered in both names when entering. Might save a hassle later.

My understanding was that the car permit is issued in one name only, and only 1 permit per name.
We have one vehicle here in each name. Both names are on both titles. We weren't given the option of having both names on either permit.

The authorities will put both names on the permit if you ask them to do so but only one person signs the paperwork. My assumption is that the person who signs is deemed the actual importer of the vehicle, but assumption is always dangerous.

Thank you all for your help. Bournemouth's last response addressed a key issue - both names on the permit. Since my wife and I have different last names, having both names on the permit should make life much easier.

I'm not getting something here. My husband and I have different last names, and have 2 vehicles in Mexico. My understanding is that you can import 1 vehicle per person. So, how could my name possibly be on 2 permits? And if one person is the importer and the other just appears on the paperwork, what does that really solve?
So far, we have had no problem with the importation papers or who drives which one. I keep copies of all our important documents in each car, including a copy of our passports, FM3, car permit, insurance papers and marriage license.

Yeah, I don't get it either. It doesn't help or change anything that I can think of to have both names on the paperwork.

Only one of those two names is the signatory to the permit - that is the person on the hook as the importer of the vehicle.
