I am guessing you were given a certain piece, rather than just taking a piece at random, if there was only one admitted to being found.

It is important that you explain to your guests, that there are 2 little plastic dolls: one is Baby and the other is a King. The one who finds the King has to please (honestly) during the feast, to the one who finds the Baby and both have to make a party on the 2nd of February (Dia de la Candelaria or Candlemas Day), inviting all the guests that are present and offer them tamales and Mexican hot chocolate. That is part of the GOOD LUCK!

And I just paid for this party - but my freinds from up north won't be here in Feb

We haven't found the king

I've never heard of a figure of a king as a tradition in the rosca--but get ready for the tamalada, invite all your in-town friends and neighbors, and have a great time. Send photos to your friends who've gone back up north!

esperanza, in Melaqué I have known of up 6 babies in 1 "Rosca", maybe just local tradition, but always an unsuspecting newbie gets one.

The same in CD Gusman.

Well, Sparks got one of our ours! There were NO babies in our rosca, I even cut up the remains and made french toast out of it in the morning looking for them. Nope! Not a one. So, Sparks, hand over my baby I just know it's over there on the west coast when it should have been assigned to the caribbean.

Here in Dallas, Texas, a Northern suburb of Guanajuato, The cakes, identical to the one in Sparks picture, have multiple babies. I cut my own piece of cake and got one, but I have only to supply tamales to the party, which will be held by someone else. One of the neighborhood ladies will make some for me and the rest will be from the La Popular tamale factory down the street.

Same here in Tuxpan. Babies, no Kings. Number of babies varies by size of the rosca.

Multiple babies, yes...but a baby and a king? I've never heard of or seen that combo.

We were once served a wonderful, light-textured, homemade rosca in Cuernavaca. Not only did it have babies, but also camels, elephants and horses.

We saw beautiful, hand decorated roscas in El Horno Los Ortiz, in Morelia last week. They didn't have any to sell walk-in customers, as you must order in advance. They were like works of art. They cost around $220 MXP

Buen provecho,

I have been in Mexico since January 5th and had the chance to attend a rosca party on the 6th. Between the initial cutting and eating up all the leftovers I, too, have ended up with 4 babies. Unfortunately, I will not be in Mexico on Feb. 2nd and will be unable to fulfill my tamale obligation.

The rosca at the party on the 6th had been purchased at Costco. It was very large and surprisingly good. There were a lot of babies in this rosca because almost everyone at the party got at least 1 and many people got 2. I was surprised that the rosca stayed fresh for as long as it did. Costco bakery items in the U.S. are often pretty good, it looks as if that may be the case in Mex too.
