There are lots of buses to Los Mochis, which I think is at least 6 hours, maybe 8. I suggest that you go to the small town of El Fuerte, just east of Los Mochis, and spend the night. It is a very nice, very old town and you can spend an enjoyable evening there. The train stops there around 9AM so you didn't have to get up so early! (I think you have to board around 630 in Mochis). Sorry I can't be more specific. I went on an arranged tour, but many friends have gone on their own with nary a problem. They all recommend overnighting in El Fuerte. Your hotel can arrange for a cab to take you to the train.

Mazdee is right on with that info. Stay in El Fuerte on the way before touring the canyon and on the way back. Much better than Los Mochis. There are a number of hotels to choose from, with the prime one, Hotel Hidalgo, just off the square, which is one of the nicest in Mexico. In Creel stay at Hotel Margarita, where a very clean room and two good meals a day cost around $50 US for two! Tour Creel and take the tours from there, locally or down into the canyon of overnight (or longer) adventures. Then hop on the train and return to El Fuerte, saving yourself four hours or more of train travel through country offering no scenery. Really great experience. Take clothes for cool temps as Creel is around 7000' in altitude, and it can get quite cool during the winter. Dick
