Sun protection for wood

I'm new to Mexico Connect, but have lived in Patzcuaro for over a year. We live at 7,800', and the sun is brutal on the exposed wood on our new home. Some of our neighbors are using Thompson's WaterSeal (it has a stain in it) to protect the wood. The problem isn't water. We have broad overhangs. Is Thompson's the best solution to the problem or is there something else?

There has just got to be something else - Thompsons Water Seal is not one of the better products on the market. Consumer Reports never rates it highly. When we lived in Salt Lake City, we used it on our deck - but only once - we switched to Behr but I would check with your local paint store to see what is available from Mexican sources. Sayer is a big company for lacquers etc. - they might have a product. It would seem to me that something with oil in it is necessary to keep the wood from drying out.

I agree that Thompson's is not the best you can do. They have spent a fortune promoting a second tier product.
