Weavings or wall hangings - Michoacan

Can't Post | Private Reply
On my previous trips mainly to the Patzcuaro area I've never seen anything I would consider a woven wall hanging of any material.

A friend and I are considering a trip down the coast, up to Uruapan and Patzcuaro, then back along 'the lake' and towards Colima in a few weeks. We'll be looking

The many, many crafts of Michoacán include weaving, but primarily for fabrics for tableclothes, dresses, belts, and blouses. You may find weavings or wall hangings that come from elsewhere in Mexico or from South America, but you probably won't find any from the state of Michoacán.

However, the ladies who live around Lake Pátzcuaro are famous for their embroidery of folk scenes. You'll find examples for sale in Pátzcuaro's shops, in the artisans' market in Tzintzuntzan, and under the portales on the small plaza.

When you know dates, let me know--I'll be there for several days mid-January and invite you to coffee.

When we were in Angahuan (gateway to Paracutin) a woman was selling some nice wool shawls along with hand stitched blouses ... but we didn't look around town for more things.

The Tzintzuntzan market only had one person selling hand stitched folk scenes and I wasn't impressed. Whats over in Quiroga that's maybe off the gringo tourist trail.

Quiroga is not that great when it comes to artesania. Wooden stuff, leather from Leon, and sort of a hodge-podge of stuff. I wouldn't bet the bank on finding wall hangings, other than the touristy stuff, there.

That one person who was selling textiles in Tzintzuntzan represents an embroidery cooperative that works in the area. Sometimes one lady is there, sometimes another, and sometimes two or three go. I agree, the things that are sold there aren't always of the highest quality.

You'd do better to shop for high-end embroidery (blouses, rebozos, etc) in the stores in Pátzcuaro and along the portales in the plaza chica. Pay particular attention to a wonderful shop called Zipolita, on the big plaza. The owner there has a fantastic eye and gets all the best stuff from all over Mexico--every kind of great artesanía.

Just be cautious: some of the very fancy embroidered goods in some of the shops aren't from Mexico. Think China.

There is a woman, Teofila, at Sanabria, 3 kms N of Tzurumútaro, who does prize-winning bordados. Her husband, Julio, does the drawings. Prices range from 100 pesos and on up. When you come, Sparks, or Esperanza, we can introduce you if you like. (Or you can easily find her shop on your own.)

We buy in SMA beautiful loomed shawls, rebozas and ponchos done by ..we are told.. by the senoras of Tzintzunzan. They are not wool but very pretty acrylic yarn in beautiful colors and textures..They could be from who knows where but it makes a nice story to tell in the States.

Another thought. El Jorongo, whose website can be found at http://eljorongo.com/, in Patzcuaro has rugs and other weavings suitable for hanging.

Hello,

Sparks and others. For beautiful wall hangings and other tapestries go to El Bernal near Querétaro. You won't be disappointed.

The big problem with Bernal is that it is both famous and close to Mexico City and it is flooded with tourists during the weekends. So it can get a bit sticky during those Saturdays and Sundays. Yet, many of the shops only open during the weekend, for that same reason.

I would recommend a visit during the week. There will be a sufficiently large number of shops open to offer a good selection. Unless of course you personally are a lover of crowds (mobs IMHO). You will miss the tianguis at the plaza but then who cares?

While there be sure and visit the winery nearby and take their free tour. The wines are excellent. A Spanish firm with wineries in Spain, France, and Mexico. The tastings are not free.

Adiós. jerezano.

Of course! El Jorongo, at the north entrance to town. How could I have forgotten.
