A sidebar : I got questioned by authorites about the CB in my car in Guerrero state. I showed them my amateur radio license (which has nothing to do with 11 meter Citizens Band). They informed me that the license wasn't worth crap and I got sent to the academia to see the Judge. An officer of the court informed the Judge that the radio trasmitter was of a very common sort. The Judge ruled "no hay delito aqui", and I was sent on my way, though I did unscrew the antenna and store it away in the trunk.
To answer your question: any trailero (semi truck driver) will know where to get radios worked on and accessorized. Its my experience that amplifiers (huarache) run about a dollar per watt, about twice what it costs stateside.
