Anyone have an update on Satellite Internet?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I looked at Technical Mexico and didn't see anything current and am wondering if anyone in the Lakeside area has satellite Internet and their experiences. Or maybe someone who has upgraded their DSL thru Prodegy.

We are in the boonies (Vista del Lago) and now have "regular" DSL which is so-so but much better than dial-up.

Thanks.

Spock, I just checked our DSL and it was running at 1.63MPS & 136KPS. Seems pretty good to me. At that kind of preformance I am very satisfied and would not want to invest in satellite internet.

How/Where do you check your speed? Are you located near a DSL switching station?

Hi Spock,

I check my speed at http://www.wugnet.com/myspeed/speedtest.asp

As for my location relative to a switching station, I have no idea where switching stations are. I am in lower Chula Vista.

I tried your test, Jerry and got 851/105 - I'm in Ajijic. Immediately after I tried Cox Las Vegas and got 875/51, followed by a Mexican service www.useros.com - 854/106 and finally Voipspeed.com with 506/106. Two of them are more or less in the same range so I'm deciding to go with their results!

I have Mexico Wireless in Vista del LAGO. It comes in three speeds. The slow, medium and fast? I have the medium and speeds are close to DSL sometimes less. depends on antenna adjustment and weather conditions. I do not kinow about the high speed.

medium speed is $395 MXN/mo.

I didn't see anyone respond to the originators request for info on Satellite so I guess I just stick my 2 centavos in. Satellite has never been a viable solution to anyone but the very wealthy and/or someone who lived where wideband of any sort was not available. The best info is on newsgroups, blogs, and URL's dealing specifically with this issue. Those are the people who are living with it. On a personal note; I investigated satellite when the wife and I were considering being on the road quite a bit and away from wideband sources. The cost of the equipment was staggering and the rates for usage were based upon Gb download and also much higher than the highest ground based broadband. On top of that we found no one (at the time) that would guarantee that it word work with someone running around in an RV and resetting things up every couple of days/weeks. I have reason to believe this has changed and if you pockets are deep enough one can solve the mobility issue.

DSL/ADSL/Wireless Broadband
There are a thousand places to check download/upload speeds on the net and many programs that will automate the process for you (IMHO a waste of money). Your results are relative to the point you are starting at and going to. When I check, which is usally only when I suspect a problem, I use severs in Washington State, Illinois, Southern Calif., Dallas, and somewhere in the Southeast. It usually only takes 10 min. to do all of them. When everything is going well <hmm, how often is that?> one should expect about 80%-85% of published speed here in Lakeside. 800/80 is darn typical of a good day here using the 1024/128 TelMex.

I would be curious to know what speeds LagunaNet and MexicoConnect Wireless customers are getting. I just experienced dial up speeds with a clients computer using LagunaNet and the "Connect Speed" was 28.8 (OhMahGawd) and that personally would drive me nutz. I didn't measure throughput, but for dial up it didn't seem to bad.

Wireless users respond, por favor?

I live in Tennessee and it rains here kind of like it does there, not too often, but hard when it does. Anyway I had satellite internet for a few years and was not happy with it. Every time it rained I lost my connection because of the rain and lightening. I do not recommend it unless that's all you can get.

Rain negatively impacts the 12 GHz band or DISH Network, Star Choice, DirecTV etc . It has less impact on WiFi or 2.4 GHz connections

You may remember in the olden days when C-band ruled. One did not have much fade due to rain, Why? Because it was/is in the 4 GHz band. Now when you triple that frequency to 12 Ghz, rain has a strong impact upon the signal. Apparently because the typical rain drop is the same size as a radio wave in the 12 GHZ or DISH Network signal.

Mexico Wireless and Lagunanet use the 2.4 GHZ frequency band. And I have never had rain fade out on my WiFi connection. But then again I live only 700 meters from the tower and have a large WiFi antenna pointing at same. In fact the owner of Lagunanet said that high humidity actually helps the connectivity somewhat.

NOTE: I updated said message, because, before the change it sounded like I was disputing Patricio's post
