Ajijic to Playa del Carmen

I'm in the middle of putting together an itinerary for someone who wants to drive from Ajijic to Playa del Carmen. I've explained that it is a several day trip and that it would be cheaper to fly. He still is interested.

The itinerary that I'm putting together requires a number of days. The idea is that if one is driving that far and through so many interesting towns and cities, one should have some time in each.

Any suggestions for hotels, special sights, restaurants, etc. in the following would be appreciated. Hotels I'm recommending are central (usually) on a major plaza, priced slightly below $1000 pesos. They are ones I've stayed in and like.

Queretero - I've recommended - Hotel Quinta Santiago.

Puebla - recommended - Hotel Camino Real.

Vera Cruz - recommended - Hotel Emperio.

Villa Hermosa - recommended - Camino Real.

Cuernavaca - no recommendation.

Chetumal/Bacalar - No recommendation. or Merida No recommendation. Help!!

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I realize that this has been covered in the past (In fact, last Christmas when I made the trip, most of the above hotels were from recommendations from the forum), but I want up-to-date information and suggestions.

The following hotels are very close to the center of town and all come highly recommended by friends(we always stayed at Dolores Alba which is less expensive and a couple of blocks further away, nice budget hotel though) Casa del Balaam is the closest to the Plaza Principal and the other two are one or two blocks further. http://www.mexicoholiday.com/destinations/maison.html Hotel Maison Lafitte\

I would suggest that a visit to Palenque on the way would be nice and is one days' drive from Merida. There are many hotels there but cannot recommend any hotel I have stayed in .

Our favorite hotel in Merida is Hotel Lafitte. Close to everything, quiet, excellent breakfasts, upscale but with good (value) prices.

For Queretaro, a very good place to stay is a B&B called HOME. Shelley is wonderful and a terrific chef. With very reasonable rates (see http://www.QueretaroBandB.com) her home is right in the center and a short walk to everything in the UNESCO Historical District.

Another downtown Queretaro B&B is Quinta Zoe, a few blocks from the plaza:

Zoe is also a trained chef.
