Getting to Mexico City

Can't Post |
I would like to travel to Mexico City and then Cuernavaca in August but I don't want to fly. I can take Amtrak from Detroit to San Antonio but then can anyone tell me the best way to get to Mexico City from there. I saw the post that there is no passenger rail in Mexico so I guess that leaves bus and car but ??? Thanks for any information. Sue

Go by bus

The first-class bus service is excellent - better than anything in the USA.

Getting to Mexico City

From San Antonio, you could take the Autobuses Americanos bus to Monterrey. However, sometimes they arrive full from Dallas and then you would have to take Greyhound to Laredo and then the "Ejecutivo" bus to Monterrey. From Monterrey, there is another "Ejecutivo" bus that goes directly to Mexico City. This bus is a little bit more expensive than the normal first class bus, but it has almost completely reclining seats and a lot of room. Since it is at least a twelve hour trip from Monterrey to Mexico City, it is worth paying a little bit more for the comfort! It is about a seven hour bus ride from San Antonio to Monterrey with Autobuses Americanos.
Another option would be to take the train to Chicago and then take the "El Conejo" bus to Monterrey.
Also, once you arrive at the bus station in Mexico City, make sure you buy a ticket to take an authorized cab inside the bus station. If not, you may risk getting into an unauthorized cab that is used to rob their passengers.
Are you planning on traveling alone? Do you speak Spanish? If not, it would be a good idea to take a Spanish speaking girl friend along with you. If you don't know any Spanish speaking people in Detroit, I can help you locate them there.
: I would like to travel to Mexico City and then Cuernavaca in August but I don't want to fly. The Bus Is The Way To Go

By all means, take the bus to Mexico City using one of the routes that Andy suggested. Busses are much different in Mexico than the US. When you ride first class or executivo, it's nicer than first class by air.One warning, be sure to take the directo busses, otherwise the ride can be tedious and slow.
I like taking the bus alone so I can meet people and practice my Spanish. I'm female, 40 something and I never have a problem. In fact, being female is a real advantage. Both men and women always seem ready to help. When I first get on the bus, I let a friendly passenger know where I'm going. That way they can tell me when to get off.
Buen Viaje!

Information on getting to Cuernavaca from Mexico City

You will also have to take a cab from the Central Norte (northern terminal for Mexico City) to the Central Sur (southern terminal), since you would be arriving at the Central Norte from Monterrey. I am guessing that the cab fare would be around $30-$40 (it would be better to have it in pesos - there are about nine pesos to the dollar now, but many Mexicans think there are ten pesos to the dollar). You could also use the Metro system to get from one terminal to the other, but you probably wouldn't be able to carry more than one small bag on the Metro (you would also have to be very careful of thieves, I understand, on the Metro).
: From San Antonio, you could take the Autobuses Americanos bus to Monterrey. Might be just as easy as going to the south terminal. Cost of the bus is $8-9. There are two stops in Cuernavaca ... the second is Centro.
