DISH Network, shutdown update

Can't Post | Private Reply
DISH Urges Subs to Act

In an effort to influence lawmakers in Washington, D.C., DISH Network has
launched savemychannels.com urging customers, retailers and DISH employees
to take action on the company's distant network dilemma. The website is
being billed as a resource to explain the impact of the recent judicial
action against DISH subscribers and other TV consumers.
Savemychannels "provides details on how affected customers and interested
parties can help efforts to preserve distant network channels for as many
DISH Network customers as possible, but only if they act right away," the
site says.

On the site, DISH has posted separate avenues of action for company
subscribers, retailers and workers to contact their senators and
representatives to help preserve their distant network signals. By calling
888.267.1127, those interested and participating in the campaign can contact
a congressional operator who will in turn forward the caller along to their
appropriate legislator's office.

DISH says on the site that due to the limited time provided by the court to
implement the decision and preserve distant nets (Dec. 1), the company "will
continue to do everything possible to prevent customers from losing their
distant network channels... Congress can pass legislation to protect
customers, and we will ask the courts to reconsider their decision."

There was a question a while back regarding the RV and Trucker exemptions for the national networks. On Monday, Echostar CEO Charlie Ergen revealed that Dish would be shutting off the networks to these accounts as well. Though the Court imposed a Dec. 1 deadline to stop transmission, Dish says they are only able to shut off about 8-10 thousand accounts daily. That leaves them well short of the 900,000 they need to shut off. So, you may still receive them after Dec.1. The only way Dish will ever be able to broadcast the Distant Networks again is for the law to change. That is why Dish is asking you to contact your lawmakers. Charlie Ergen is a VERY smart man. He had to know he was going to lose this court battle. Dish did not provide even one page of evidence in their defense. I honestly believe he created all this hoopla so that congress would review the inequities between satellite and cable transmission of local channels. If the laws do get changed, it actually would be a relatively "cheap" investment for him. The cost of the court battle and the lost income from shutting of the distants will be vastly outweighed by future income if laws make it easier for you and I to get certain channels. Besides, how many of these 900,000 accounts do you think will make a "cyber move"?? A simple address will allow you to still receive the same channels you were always getting.

Some people is SMA are reporting that their networks have been shut down effective today. Well, it looks like Dish had something up their sleeve. They have apparently leased transponder 15 on satellite 119 (receivable in Mexico) to NPS. Apparently the distant networks will be available by subscribing to the NPS service which isn't covered by the court's order. Read more tomorrow if it affects you:

https://www.mydistantnetworks.com/
http://www.callnps.com/default.htm As I interpret this, the C band provider, will actually broadcast the networks but they will be viewable by folks who use Dishnetwork receivers. Already, the plaintiffs are crying foul but the few opinions so far expressed indicate that what they are doing in circumventing the court order passes legal muster. As usual, the devil is in the details so try those links tomorrow and we shall see.

Gee you beat me to it Brian. Smile I just heard on a C- band talk radio show the news you posted above. I think they said that the cities available will be SF and Atlanta and as you said 119W which we can pick up as far south as Lake Chapala on a 4 foot dish.

And 119 W is the bird every dish owner points his satellite dish at here in Ajijic. Those who want extra programming also point a slightly larger dish (about a 2 meter in Ajijic) at 110 W

We lost our network service yesterday. I had previously changed my address to NYC and so was surprised that I lost the east coast. I called Dish and they apologized and explained that I could no longer get the service. "However," they said, " for the same price you can get the NY local stations." These include all the network stations plus several that I was not getting before. Sounds OK to me.

Now I'm trying to figure how to get my west coast service. Until the posts above, I have been thinking that I will have to get an entirely new account and give the local provider many $$$.

From what you say, there is a way around that expedient. What do I do? When do I do it? Is it only SF? That is good for me, as I'm from the Bay Area. My wife will not be amused. She will insist that I go ahead and get an account for the LA or SD area.

If I get a new account, I have been told I will not need a new dish, but will need a new receiver. Can anyone explain how two different accounts of Dish Network can come to the same TV?

We tried another approach. We signed up for the "local channels" for Odessa Texas. These are the "local channels" that are available for our Texas address. They signed us up but we could not get the stations. We were told that they were on sat 110 instead of 119 which we were using. We switched over to 110 and after a little fooling aroung found that these "local stations" are furnished by SPOT BEAMING. This seems to mean that they will only be available if you really live at your Texas address. Bummer

Yes, you will need a separate receiver and the feed from the dish(es). Basically a duplicate of what you already have. You may need switches, it really depends on your current setup. I would need more info. to be more specific.

It really depends on your television. If you have a tv with multiple inputs, simply plug the new receiver output into a different input. You would then select which input you wish to view from the tv menu. Or if you have an older tv with only one input or you don't like the above solution, then get either a video or audio/video switch to control which receiver you wish to watch. You only need the A/V switch if you listen to sound via your tv. Both receivers input into the switch, but there is only one output that goes to your tv. Make sure you get the switch that matches your input and output needs. See some examples here.
http://www.radioshack.com/...rigkw=video%20switch

Also, you should change the remote control address for one of the receivers or you will be controlling both of them at the same time. Unplug the receiver you are not changing. PM me if you have other questions.

Dear Bryan, I've learned about this new way to receive the major networks (now digital) here in Mexico....for me, hopefully in San Miguel de Allende. I have a C-band system with the Motorola digital box, which of course will not recieve CBS, NBC, ABC, or FOX !!
I guess my question is, if I buy a Dish box, register it in an area that will be approved by the powers that be, will I be able to watch those here in SMA with my 9ft dish C-band system with basically 2 boxes....one that I watch all my analog on (C-Band)...and the Dish box for the majors ?
I just want to go about this the right way before I invest/register, to then find out it will not work.
Any info/help will be greatly appreciated.....you cam also e-mail me at interdrum@yahoo.com
Sincerely, Scott Mason

Hi Scott

I'm sorry but I really don't have any experience with C band. The FAQ seems to indicate that you should have no problem combining the services. Here's the link...good luck

Cynthia, you wrote "I have a C-band system with the Motorola digital box, which of course will not recieve CBS, NBC, ABC, or FOX !!"

You couldn't be more wrong. With the C-band Motorola digital receiver you can pick up 8 network stations from the greater Denver area. Those stations available are

Amc - 1 at 103 degrees W.

KDVR-TV (FOX - Denver) Channel 501 E
KWGN-TV (WB - Denver) Channel 502 E
KCNC-TV (CBS - Denver) Channel 503 E
KUSA-TV (NBC - Denver) Channel 504 E
KMGH-TV (ABC - Denver) Channel 505 E
KBDI-TV (PBS - Denver) Channel 506 E
KTVD-TV (My - Denver) Channel 507 E
KRMA-TV (PBS - Denver) Channel 500 E

To find out about subscribing thereto go to www.callnps.com To learn more about C band Digital receivers go to www.skyvision.com . The digital receiver is called a 4DTV receiver

Jerry: I have been assured that with the correct billing address in the correct area that you can continue to get the network stations. For example if you have an address in the correct City, a city that has a wide or conus beam rather than a narrow or spot beam, you are authorized to watch that Channel. And if you have an address in an area that does not have coverage via satellite from DISH, you ware authorized to go to appropriate link at www.callnps.com They are the same folks that provide me my C band coverage.

There are many ways to get the US network stations in most parts of Mexico. From Star Choice you can get Seattle, Spokane, Detroit, and Buffalo. From C Band you get Denver, and from DISH there are many many stations available on the some 11 satellites DISH has. Sure most of the beams are spot beams, but there are quite a few cities that are transmitted on broad or Conus beams which can be viewed in Mexico on these 11 satellites. Take a look at http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/america.html , left-click on the SID column to the right of any DISH satellite and you will find all kind of possible US areas where the cities are transmitted on CONUS beams.

Of these 11 satellites some are harder to pick up than others. But my point is that there are many many ways to get the US network stations here in Mexico via DISH, via Star Choice, via C band or not yet mentioned via a free-to-air receiver

As I said above, you cannot get the east coast network stations with even a NY address. You can, however, get the NYC local stations, which are exactly the same - and for the same price, we get stations we did not get before.

Now, I'm waiting to get a new account for west coast if I can come up with an LA or Orange County address or if my familie's SD county address allows us to get LA "local" stations. If that works, all's right with the world.

I admire Rolly for going without, but I cannot do so. I have to have my Judge Judy and Playboy Channel (Oh, that's right, I don't get Playboy channel and never watch Judge Judy). It's sort of like the old joke "now that I have had my arm re-attached will I be able to play the piano. Yes. Cool, I never could before."

I really miss the networks! But all we have is Telecable de Zapopan at the moment.

You can see Judge Judy and also sign up for the Playboy Channel through them. Okay, I don't watch them either. But we get programming in English on CNN, Sony and WB (it seems to still exist -- I'm watching it now) and a few other channels. I confess I hate watching Turner Classic Movies in Spanish.

I understand Telecable de Zapopan is the same company that supplies the Chapala Lakeside, and that they're part of a monopoly throughout Mexico.

If you find yourself high and dry....

Dick - we are still getting the networks with a Manhattan address - just not PBS which went to a spot beam sometime back. Although some people tell me they are still getting PBS - so there is a lot here that I do not now, nor ever will, understand. But -we still have the networks plus the local stations.

A slight misunderstanding here. With a Manhattan address you are qualified for the local channels. The local network channels just happened to be the the same channels people were receiving when getting the Distant Networks from NY. Alas, the PBS local you are entitled to is now on a spot beam transponder, along with all of the other NY channels that you do not receive. But, the national PBS network is different from your local PBS channel and was not part of the law suit that Dish lost. Therefore, people that were entitled to the Distant Networks still are eligible for the national PBS network. It is broadcast on a ConUS transponder, meaning Continental US(and Mexico). In bournemouth's case, she can either have PBS or her local networks, but not both. It is address dependent.

So Tim - let me see if I am grasping this - we are getting NBC, CBS ABC and Fox, both local NY stations and the national broadcasts - are you telling me I should not be getting the national broadcasts? I do understand the PBS thing - personally I'd ditch the nationals and go with PBS but the other person in this house likes the sports stuff he gets from the nationals. But if you are telling me I can ditch the local stations and get PBS - I'd do it!
