Better to cross at Eagle Pass or Laredo?

Can't Post |
When an emergency forced me back to the States four months ago, I crossed the border at Nuevo Laredo on a drizzly December Saturday afternoon. The stop-and-go wait of three hours was too much for my old van, and it died halfway across the bridge. Luckily, two wonderful Mexicans pushed me the rest of the way to the United States, my car eventually started again, and I was able to resume my journey. Still, that was not an experience I'm anxious to repeat.
I'll be re-entering Mexico April 1, Easter Monday, and would like to avoid a wait at the border.
Can anyone give advice about the Eagle Pass crossing? Is it better for an FM3 holder to cross there rather than Laredo? Is it just as easy to access the Saltillo-Zacatecas route via Eagle Pass? Are the roads in good condition with plenty of Pemexes?
If you think I'd be better off crossing at Laredo, is there a better time than another to avoid wait time?
Thank you for any help you can give.

We have crossed at both points. The road from Piedras Negras to Saltillo is quite a bit of two lane but not heavy traffic. The border crossing is sleepy. You will be dumped into Saltillo proper. The first overpass you come to after the GM plant is the periferico. I would head to the right and stay on the Periferico until you come to the Zacatecas carretara.
Personally I would cross at Laredo. We generally cross early and have never had a wait. (Waits are more associated with the US crossing.) The roads to Saltillo are much better on this route.
