New phone numbers

Does anyone know what the heck is going on with the new area codes\? We've been unable to reach my in-laws in Palma Sola in Veracruz for months now. Everyone says dial 1 before the local area code (which is 229) but we never get anything but a busy signal. What's the secret?

Where are you - US/Canada or Mexico? If in Mexico, it's 01 before the area code. If in the US it's 011-52-area code and number. Unless, of course, you are calling a cell phone number, in which case it is 045 before the number when calling internally - I can't remember what it is internationally.

Michael, the new area code is listed as '296' the old as '2'.

Have to do some guessing, since the area code and number should total 10 digits, so you may try:

2962+ their previous 6 digits or
2296+ previous 6 digits or
296+ their previous 7 digits if they had seven before.

The '296' comes from telmex's site www.telmex.com.mx

Here in Boca del Rio used to be '29', now is '2299' plus previous 6.

Also you must dial '01152' then the 10 digits with the new lada.
