camping and other in San Carlos area

Can someone tell me if there are good oceanfront campgrounds with facilities in the area in or a short drive from San Carlos? How about a modestly-priced hotel or rental house? My son and family just moved to Tucson and are looking for beach time. We live in Ajijic so would love to fly over and join them, if we can find an affordable place to stay. If anyone is reading this who lives there and wants to swap houses, this is a definite possibility.

Hotel Playa de Cortez in the Miramar section of Guaymas, about 15 minutes from San Carlos. It has a run down, but very interesting hotel as well as an RV park. I don't know if they allow camping without an RV, but think they have facilities for camping. It's not super cheap, but has lots of room for family groups, large grounds, and a restaurant. Prices $70 midweek and $90 weekends (Fri-Sunday??). Prices are US.

It is right on the bay - the other side from San Carlos.

For further info about the hotel, check out previous postings - Use search string Hotel Playa de Cortez.

Here are a couple of sites for San Carlos:

Look at the website of Casa de Amigos - they have many rentals and it will give your son a good idea of what is available:

Thank you all for the suggestions. I will follow them up. The San Carlos area seems like a good place for my son to spend long weekends at the beach now that he has moved to Tucson with the family. And, with cheap flights on Aviacsa from Guad to Hermosillo, we may be able to join him now and then.

Another possibility is Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point), a four hour drive from Tucson. Some prices are like stateside prices, but you can explore and find good prices. The beaches south of town are divine, the ones north aren't bad either. You cross at Lukeville(US)/Sonoyta(MX), then drive west through the desert (good road) for the last of the 4 hours. Try it. Rocky Point is commonly referred to as Phoenix's beach, it's only a few hours from either Phoenix or Tucson. I don't know about getting there from Ajijic but for your son it would be an easy weekend getaway.

Rocky Point has now become so developed that what used to be camping beaches (Sandy Beach) are now heavily developed. To get to Rocky Point from Ajijic would involve flying to Phoenix (non stop flight) or Tucson and then driving for four hours or so.

Yes, I see that Puerto Penasco would be closer to Tucson, and no doubt he will want to check that out.

We are now considering the possibility of a bit of a family reunion that would involve my son and his family driving with our daughter from Tucson to San Carlos, and we flying from Guad to Hermosillo and getting a bus to San Carlos. There would be 7 of us in all, so we are considering renting 2 condos, or one large house. Does this sound do-able? As I write it, it sounds rather effortful!

We are entranced by the possibilities of San Carlos, but is there a sandy beach anywhere between Bahia Kino and Guaymas? Or is all this area pebbly at best?
