New Car Purchase

| Private Reply
Hello all......

I am preparing to purchase a new Mazda CX-5 in Puerto Vallarta. The 2018 model is just now being delivered to Mexico. (these are listed as a 2017 in the US and Japan).

We have a new dealership opening here in a couple of weeks and I've already been talking to a new sales person about the color of car I want and when they will have cars available to view and drive.

I have a permanent resident card and have lived in Mexico a bit more than 5 years in my own home. I currently own a Toyota Tacoma which I sold yesterday.

My question: do any of you have recent experience buying a NEW car in Mexico from a dealership and if so, what was the negotiation process like for you? Was there much flexibility in the advertised price? Did the dealership do the licencing process? Did you feel like you got a good 'deal' on your new car?

So far my conversations with the dealership have been on line and in Spanish. I will take a Mexican friend with me when it is time to actually iron out all the specifics of the 'deal'.

Thanks in advance for your shared experiences......Dave

I have purchased 2 new cars since I moved to the Lake Chapala area 12 years ago. Both from dealers in Guadalajara. I can best describe the experience as pleasant and respectful. The price included all taxes, license, etc.. In both cases I got a discount after simply asking for their "best price." In one case the discount was 12% in the other it was 10%. I was totally satisfied. BTW, I had done by homework via the web so I knew what the full price would be.

Our experience buying both new and used cars from new car dealerships in Guadalajara was similar to David‘s.
Go for it!

We had a good experience buying through a Nissan dealer in 2013 in Yucatan, but I would say that, compared to the US, there is very little ''dealing'' -- the listed price is the the price, although sometimes extras are offered free or at discount.

I believe the days of negotiating a better price at a new car dealership are over. I think it has something to do with money laundering.

We purchased a new car this time last year. We were able to negotiate 'premium' floor mats and an english language owners manual. When the car came it did not have the navigation system we had paid for - so they reimbursed that amount. The dealership was in a different state from where we live - perhaps an hour or so away. The salesman was kind enough to put dealer plates on the car and bring it to us at the house - where we finished up the paperwork. That made it much easier for us to register the vehicle here as 'new'.

Thanks to all of you who replied with your own experiences. My car is some weeks out at this point but I did meet with a very nice salesman yesterday and put in an order. They will begin the search for the color I want in the CX 5. It's an exciting process and I'm looking forward to having a new car for my travels in Mexico!

UPDATE: I met on Wednesday with my Mazda salesman. He was kind enough to come to the house as I've already sold my other vehicle. We went through the numbers together; I'm paying the advertised price for the car in cash. I added the extended warranty and two accessories. He agreed to give me the all weather floor mats and security lug nuts. We talked about insurance and limits/deductibles and I'm working with a broker in Vallarta to get it covered. I've already made a deposit and we agreed on a date for the final balance. License and registration will be handled by them and I'll pay the fee for that.

My 2018 Mazda CX-5 is currently on a boat coming from Japan. The only blue CX-5 on the boat....and soon to be the only one in all of Mexico. Arriving in Lazaro Cardenas on the 15th, moved to Toluca for equipment check and then delivered to Puerto Vallarta, hopefully by the end of the month, if all works out........LOL. I'll not hold my breath.....

Our car is bronze and when we purchased it we were told it was the only bronze model in Mexico as well :-) To be honest we have only seen two models of our car of any color in our town.

We purchased the auto insurance for our two cars and house from our bank. They were much better policies than what we had before and because we have a premium account at the bank we received a decent discount.
