Oh man. Why are those of us who live here always the last to know?

Good day to not be out on the highway. Last week at this time we were out in Zihuatanejo, returned last Friday. I'd hate to have my car burned up for use as a road block.

The residents of northern mexico rely upon twitter. Virtually every bit of breaking news worldwide appears on twitter before the traditional media sources.

Those of us w/o Facebook or Twitter or better than average Spanish skills, are kept in the dark? I had to search google news to get info after a forum post this morning that just mentioned a 'shooting' in Spanish. My Spanish isn't that good. I had to use an online translator to find out what it meant. If I lived there, I'd want to know what going on in my back yard??

An American friend in Pátzcuaro emailed us with with links to more recent ocurrences reported in Quadratin: http://www.quadratin.com.mx, an online "newspaper".

The gist is that there have been or may presently ocurring attacks over a widespread area.

Among other items of potential interest to travelers, the Morelia Bus Station (TAM) has had departures and arrivals suspended until further notice.

This is a good time NOT to be traveling in Michoacán.

El Universal http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/notas/729275.html reports that the blockades have been cleared.

Three dead, among them, a baby, in Apatzingan. Apatzingan, in La Tierra Caliente, was apparently the scene of the most intense violence.
La Marina Mexicana was called in to support local police forces.

I am somewhat confused by conflicting or vague details in various news reports. From a local perspective, did the rumored killing of Nazario Moreno Gonzalez El Chayo provide the excuse for all of these events?

I don't think so, Neil. Apparently his death ocurred during Wednesday's conflict in Apatzingan.

The violent actions seem to be over for the most part, but for many of us, a feeling of uncertainty remains.

There's still possibly related damage, in the form of a few corpses (near Capula, for example) being discovered, but the victims may have been killed before the Wednesday-Thursday outbreak of violence.

BlogdelNarco contains a message purportedly from members of El Chayo's family to President Calderon which can only be interpreted as a threat of more violence. It cautions residents to remain home and avoid hospitals and shopping areas. It seems to go to the length of sanctifying Chayo. El Mas Loco is now dead but the rest of these guys are also crazy with La Tuta heading the list. More caos can be expected as the Zetas try to muscle in on the weakened La Familia business.

Here is an article about the blog entry mentioned above. It's veracity is being investigated. In the past, blogdelnarco seems to have information before the other sources.

Having been to Capula numerous times, I would have to wonder why they would be attracted to that town or really village? Off a main highway and as far as I know, only two roads leading out of town, if it was a matter of control it could probably be accomplished with just a few. It goes to show that even the smallest of villages isn't immune to the reach of these highly motivated narcos!

The reason that small villages appear in the news so often is that the cartel's foot soldiers are generally housed and trained on ranchos rather than within cities themselves.

Makes sense but talk about a sleepy little village! Then again, there are probably plenty of spots to set a meth lab in the area away from prying eyes.

Maybe that is their reason? Be where people least expect to find you. It would also be virtually impossible for anyone new (rival gang, federal investigators, intelligence agents) to arrive without being spotted.

About Capula:
I'm trying to recall the brief news note, and where I read it, about one body, in a state of decomposition, found near the salida a Quiroga, a la altura de Capula.

Unfortunately, having read so many news articles in the last 36 hours, I can't recall the details nor the website.

Another body was reported to me by a private source, within the municipio of Pátzcuaro.

Also generally unreported was the bloqueo and incendio of one to two vehicles on Ctra Fed 14, near Tzurumútaro, within the municipio of Pátzcuaro. Again, from anonymous and private sources.

I am having a similar problem remembering where I read something - way too many news reports to remember! Seems to me that I read one or more reports about grenades being used in Patzcuaro with I think a number of civilians and police being injured?

Set your Google to default to noticias de Mexico. From there you can search recent articles by keyword. Actually the incident occurred on the road between Morelia and Patzcuaro:

Federal operation continues in Michoacan.

http://www.lajornadamichoacan.com.mx/...amp;article=003n1pol

In El Quatrain, search for articles under 'Justicias' for other news of crime-related muertos, balaceras, bloqueandos, etc. in the general area.
http://www.quadratin.com.mx/seccion/notas,6/

For example, last night just before midnight, as people in Tecatitlan Jalisco(just across Michoacan border) gathered, listening to mariachi music as part of La Fiesta de Guadalupe. Gunmen burst onto the scene, killing ten and wounding thirty more.

When one reads that the boss had 400 gunman for protection, it provides a grasp of the magnitude of just what the police and military are up against! Apparently after a lull on Friday, things seem to be heating up again today.
