Pros and Cons using TomTom Via 1500TM GPS in USA & Mexico

While traveling 3000 miles from my home in Mexico, my old and trusted friend
TomTom One XL GPS unit, broke beyond repair.
This forced me to make a quick purchase of a cheap GPS unit at local walmart to continue my journey.

List of TomTom Via 1500TM features

Lifetime Map and Traffic Updates US, Canada and Mexico
5.0" Touch screen - for better visibility
Intuitive user interface - For first time users
IQ Routes - Directs you to the quickest, most efficient route
Advanced Lane Guidance - Use the best lane to get to your destination
Integrated Mount - for mounting unit to window or car dashboard
Memory card slot - for future map updates
4GB of internal memory.

Pros

1. Using “MyTomTom” software makes updating both operating system
and maps flawless.
2. User interface new design improved for first time users.
3. 5.0” Touch screen for me is a must have for long trips.

Cons

1. “MyTomTom” software current version has only limits features.
2. Integrated mount must be remove before placing GPS unit in carrying case.
3. Partial coverage of Mexico 74.4% and detailed coverage of 70 cities.
4. Mount GPS unit to car dashboard for better visibility.
5. Advanced Lane Guidance not yet available in Mexico.
6. Traffic alerts not yet available in Mexico.
7. Mandatory software update before using this GPS unit.
After two map updates and many months of using this GPS unit it has now
earn my respect. the more I use it the more I trust it. the 1500TM is a workhorse.
It does what it is supposed to do. It functions very well after updating the software and map.

Note:

There is NO (current) way to manipulate/cracking/patch/copy/clone or otherwise modify this v11.037 navcores.

Is it possible to become lost while using a GPS in Mexico? Yes
This has happen to me four times in the same big city of Monterrey
(NL)

1st
2006-My copilot turned volume off on GPS unit, so I can better listen to her talk.
I was surprised to find myself driving in rush hour traffic in the center of Monterrey.

2nd
2007-My copilot discovered a shortcut road around Monterrey while looking at a paper map of Mexico. This shortcut cost me an extra tank of gas.

3rd
2010-My copilot discovered she could save $50 by drive the free road around Monterrey. This free road cost me four new tires for the car.

4th
2012-My copilot discovered a new toll road around Monterrey. Took both Garmin and TomTom one extra hour to find and exit out of the downtown Monterrey.

Please notice, I was careful not to use the word wife while writing this article.

Maybe it is time for a software update of the copilot? My model of copilot hates maps, makes no claim to being able to understand maps and main priority is finding new places to shop. If I make a wrong turn, get lost(never) or make a poor routing decision, it is on me and either our Garmin or Guia Roji. Certainly keeps the stress to a minimum!

On recent long distance trips to US, we used three different routs (2012).

Rout-A
1. Guadalajara (Jal), Need extra money for toll roads
2. Aguascalientes (AGS), Use the anillo periferico around the city
3. Zacatecas (COAH), Fill up gas tank before continuing
4. Saltillo (COAH), New toll road around the city, not yet on GPS maps
5. Monterrey (NL), Stay far away from new toll road
6. Reynosa (TM), Good hotels, before crossing the border

Rout-B
1. Guadalajara (Jal), Try to avoid rush hour traffic
2. Lagos De Moreno (Jal), New toll road, wait for new road signs to be installed.
3. Ojuelos De Jalisco (Jal), Use toll road around city
4. San Luis Potosi (SLP), Save some time use toll road around city
5. Matehuala (SLP), If tired spend the night
6. Monterrey (NL), Use old toll road around city, avoid getting lost
7. Reynosa (TM), Food and gas

Rout-C
1. Guadalajara (Jal), Try to avoid driving at dark
2. Lagos De Moreno (Jal), New toll road not yet on GPS maps
3. Ojuelos De Jalisco (Jal), Food and gas
4. San Luis Potosi (SLP), New shortcut toll road to Ciudad Victoria, not yet on GPS maps
5. Ciudad Victoria (TAMP), Use the anillo periferico around the city
6. Reynosa (TM), Cross bridge to Pharr (TX)
7. Pharr (TX), New Costco opened in April

Notes:
Rout to Ciudad Victoria has the best views, but we will not drive this road in the winter or rainy season.

A copilot is always helpful when navigating the roads of Mexico. Yes this sometimes is a wife.

While driving in Mexico, I always use both TomTom and Garmin GPS units with updated maps.

What States, Provinces, and other areas are included in each of the regions listed during the map update?
Garmin

When running a map update, you may be informed that your device doesn't have enough internal memory to load the full coverage of North America. When this occurs, you may be able to load the map update directly to an SD card if you're updating a device that supports this process.

If your device doesn't support this process, you will instead be presented with a list of reduced coverage regions from which you may choose the area that you would like to have installed directly to the device.

Can I load maps directly to an SD card during a map update?

The most recent versions of the Garmin Map Updater for Onetime updates and the Garmin Lifetime Updater now offer the ability to install mapping to an SD card if your device does not have enough space to fit the maps in the internal memory.

The SD card installation option will only appear when you are updating a compatible device that does not have sufficient internal space for the selected map region. When notified that the device doesn't have sufficient space, you may either install mapping to an SD card or view additional installation options. At this point the application will indicate how much free space will be required to install the selected region on an SD card.

How do I install mapping to my device with MapInstall?

There are many situations where it may be desirable to install additional mapping to a Garmin GPS. One of the most common programs used to transfer mapping to a device is MapInstall. This software is available for both Windows and Mac OS X, and can be downloaded for free from the Mapping Software page of the Garmin web site.

Head Up Displays (HUDs) are the favoured solution for fighter jets, and even some passenger aircraft, but their cost and complexity means their adoption in the automotive world has, until now, been the preserve of high end vehicles.

Outdated GPS Maps
With lots of people recently purchasing GPS navigation systems for summer travel and outdoor activities, one of the most common questions/complaints we receive is Why are the maps outdated?. Let’s look at the normal flow of information starting with the people who map the roads and ending up at your GPS.

Map features I like most when traveling in Mexico.

TomTom map are excellent at navigating in large cities that have many bridges, tunnels, and overpasses. Also map background changes colors as you travel thru deserts, wetland, mountains, forests, this is nice to view while on a long trip.

Garmin map have a large number of (POIs) points of interests, in both large and small cities, this makes finding a hotel, a restaurant, or a small town road easier.

Mexico GPS Atlas map are best used when locating hard to find locations and places.

With all three maps, my copilot believes she has the perfect GPS unit for Mexico.

Garmin released
CityXplorer North America 2013.10

With cityXplorer maps you can access all the information you need to get around the city you're visiting on foot or public transport .

If you're visiting a new city on holiday or business, a cityXplorer map downloaded to your nüvi helps you get around just like a local. The enhanced pedestrian mode gives you walking directions, including footpaths and shortcuts through parks, with landmarks indicated along the way. The public transport mode tells you where to catch trains, buses and tubes (where relevant) and how long it will take to reach your destination. cityXplorer public transport timetables ensure you arrive at the station on time and don't have to wait too long for your connection.

Smartsense navigation system works where GPS won't - indoors

It's not that long ago that GPS capabilities in a mobile phone were considered a standout feature. Today, GPS navigation is standard for smartphones, and as a result, many of us have come to rely on them when it comes to getting from A to B. However, GPS technology isn't without its faults, and if A to B is located under a roof, out of sight of the orbiting GPS satellites, then you can end up falling back on the not always reliable sense of direction. To fix the problem, Fraunhofer Research is developing Smartsense, a smartphone sensor capable of providing accurate navigation indoors, without the aid of GPS.

Mexican road maps are made in Mexico by Guía Roji

In the USA or Canada it is easy to find good, up-to-date road maps of those countries, but this is not true of Mexico. All the road maps of Mexico that I have seen for sale in the USA are inadequate, inaccurate and out of date. By far the best Mexican road maps are made in Mexico by Guía Roji. They make a huge variety of maps -- country, state and city maps as well as an atlas which I use.

BaseCamp is a program that can be used to create routes and waypoints, send these to your GPS, and receive tracklogs (containing the tracks you have followed). Main uses are that you can prepare and analyze routes on your computer instead of the small GPS screen and organize your planned routes.

The National Bike Registry tells us that thousands of bikes are stolen every day in the United States alone, estimating a cost of around US$200 million per year. A stolen bike can take hundreds or thousands of dollars out of your pocket, leave you without a means of transit and turn into a frustrating, angering experience. The SpyBike Covert Bicycle GPS Tracker protects you from theft by tracking down your bike.

Apple signed TomTom for mapping services, and is apparently jettisoning Google Maps, to set up a potential collision between the two industry giants. The deal between the media giant and TomTom came after Apple rolled out mapping options for its new operating system at a conference in San Francisco.

GPS-enabled app helps the blind take the bus

Like the rest of us, the blind can use speaking navigation apps to find their way
around the city. A new Android application developed at Spain’s Universitat
Autònoma de Barcelona, however, is designed specifically to help blind people get
to their destination by bus. Appropriately named OnTheBus, the app could also be
used by the deaf, the cognitively-impaired, or anyone else.

Alternative battery for Garmin nuvi 205W
Hi I am an Australian in Vietnam and my Garmin nuvi 205W battery went down. As you can imagine you can not buy a Garmin battery here so I did some researching and found no alternatives on the net. I took the battery out and went looking at the mobile phone shops in town. Found that the Nokia BL-5J is a perfect match. It fits the Nokia 5230 / 5800 / C3-00 / N900 / X6 it has 1320mha and 3.7v. Exact same size and only cost US $3 and re soldering the contacts on the new battery was done for free in the store. Works like a charm. I hope this helps some else out in the future.

The video shows how to re soldering the contacts on the new Nokia BL-5J battery.

TomTom Goes Large With a 6-Inch-Screen VIA 1605TM GPS
Still not convinced smartphones are as good as GPS devices? You're not alone. The VIA 1605TM features the largest screen TomTom has ever used for a GPS device: 6 inches—and it's sharp.

How to Buy a GPS
It's a great time to buy a GPS. The category has matured, and competition from nav-equipped smartphones has helped drive prices way, way down. As a result, you can get a capable stand-alone GPS that can do much more than just help you find your way, for a lot less than you would have paid just last year.

The 10 Best GPS Devices
The death of the dedicated GPS device has been greatly exaggerated. Sure, today's mobile devices integrate talented—and sometimes free—navigation apps, but not everyone wants to use a phone or a huge tablet for driving directions. With a standalone GPS, you can just leave it in the car and forget about it, until, of course, you're lost in an unfamiliar place. Or you're on a road trip, it's 1AM, and you're desperately searching for the nearest Taco Bell. Or you want to avoid sitting in an hour of turnpike traffic.

How to Find the Right GPS App for Your Phone
These days, nearly all cell phones on the market now include some sort of GPS capability. That's a remarkable change. Just a few years ago, standalone GPS devices, which you stick on your windshield with a suction cup, were in the spotlight. These devices were a boon for anyone sick of getting lost, using paper maps, or printing out MapQuest directions, all of which were driving distractions and potential safety risks.

Can I Really Change the Battery on My Device?
Most anyone can, with the right tools and instructions, take apart a device, replace the battery, and put it back together. Whether you're replacing your Garmin Nuvi battery, Garmin Streetpilot battery, Amazon Kindle battery, Palm Tungsten battery, Magellan Roadmate battery, Magellan Maestro battery, TomTom battery, iRiver battery, or many others, the change can typically be accomplished. While it is possible that something could go wrong, we do have thousands of customers happy with their successful installation and newly revived PDA, GPS, or e-Reader. Not only can you change the battery, but often you can choose a battery with a substantially longer run time than your old battery.

Garmin nuvi recommendations for combo USA & Europe
Some choices depending on how you'd like to use your nuvi over time. First there are some nuvi models that come with both North America and Europe maps preinstalled. These models would include any model where the model number ends in 70 or 75. The only current models that would qualify are the 2475LT or 2370LT. In addition you could also find older models like the 770 or 775.

The other option is to purchase any of the current nuvi models that meet your needs for use in the US and then add Europe maps by purchasing them separately on an SD card or by DVD.

“Garmin Adventures” is a new feature that allows you to easily share trips and photos and lets you find Adventures by other Garmin users. You can download a track from your GPS to BaseCamp, add some photos, videos and annotations; upload the trip as an Adventure and then share it via the Garmin Adventures web site with friends and family. BaseCamp allows you to author Adventures, and use a playback feature so you can re-live your trip. In the near future, Garmin devices will add support for Adventures as well.

Garmin vs. TomTom: Which GPS Should I Buy?
As a long-time reviewer of GPS devices, one of the tougher questions I'm often asked is whether Garmin or TomTom makes the better products. The good news is that both are tops in the class. Garmin still holds the lead in sales, but the two are so close in feature sets, pricing, and routing accuracy, that you generally can't go wrong with either one. In this article I'll try to break it down further, so you can see where the specific differences between the two lie.

Garmin Nuvi Models - Approximate Release Date History
Garmin introduced the first nuvi's back in 2005 as a major upgrade in product design from the legacy StreetPilot series. Since that first nuvi 300, there has been a steady stream of new model anouncements in this series. The model numbering sequence and feature sets are far from logical and can cause confusion in our discussions in the forum. I thought it would be helpful and interesting to have a comprehensive reference list of the various model groups and their approximate release dates.

Hunters find body 18 months after GPS debacle
In March of 2011, Albert Chretien and wife Rita, followed their GPS onto a Forest Service road and got stuck in mud (pictured below) at about 6000 feet elevation. Three days later, he set out for help, guided by an auto GPS. Rita was found alive at the van 49 days later, but Albert’s remains were never located until now.

Suction Cup Tips
Over the years I've become really good at getting GPS suction cup mounts to stick, and I've learned quite a few tricks along the way. Often you can just take the mount out of the box, press it up against the windshield, and drive away. Other times you might not be so lucky. If your suction cup has lots its suck, and you are beginning to think the mount sucks, here are some tips.

Tips and Tricks for using your GPS unit for the busy holiday driving season.

1. I learned the hard way not to update maps while on vacation or 4 hours before starting a long driving trip. Something will always go wrong.

2. Last year I forgot to carry my spare GPS unit that had fresh new maps installed. It would have been nice to have it when my GPS unit broke 3000 miles from home.

3. I found out it is easier to replace a dead GPS battery at home then while on vacation,
A typical GPS battery will last for about three years.

4. Be sure you have fixed and tested any problems with the GPS unit before using it on vacation. Always carry a new paper map just in case.

5. Take some time to learn, free software from Garmin and TomTom for planning a long trip.

6. Mounting the GPS unit to the windshield in the cool early morning, will fall off in the late afternoon when the windshield becomes hot.

7. Twice I found fresh new maps of North America will not work on Europe roads.
Now my wife will confirms I have installed the correct memory card in the GPS unit.

8. In California, it is cheaper to update Safety Cameras Alerts on the GPS then pay for a speeding ticket.

9. Garmin City Explorer Maps are very useful to have in a big city like New York.

10. Cheaper to remove the GPS unit from the car and carry the unit into hotel room, then pay for a broken window and new GPS.

My number one reason for buying a GPS.
When my wife ask where are we now? I only need to point to the map on the screen.

Note
I have always found its cheaper for me to learn from others peoples mistakes then to make them myself.

How to update Garmin firmware using WebUpdater
Garmin rolls out lots of firmware/software updates (terms that I will use interchangeably here)
for their GPS receivers. Sometimes it’s bug fixes, sometimes you get new features
(though the latter is more likely with handheld units than auto).
But for many owners, it’s a mysterious process or an option they aren’t even aware of.

POLL: Do you want your GPS to say recalculating?
Recalculating. It’s a word from your GPS that’s become part of the popular culture, quite often being made fun of. Miss a turn (even intentionally) and your GPS keeps saying it over and over until you return to the route, stop navigation or mute the blasted thing.

There were so many complaints that Garmin actually took it out of their units, starting with the 2012 line. The 2013 nuvi series won’t say it either. Given all the complaints, you’d think that would make people happy, right?
Imagine my surprise when I started seeing questions in our comments, with many people wanting to know which nuvis they could buy that would still say recalculating. So today I’m putting the question to you…do you want your GPS to say “recalculating” or not?

More Garmin nuvis bite the dust
With the announcement of the 2013 nuvi series, we were expecting Garmin to move more models to the discontinued list. That has indeed happened; in addition to several 14xx series models, they’ve also pulled the plug on the nuLink 1695, and most 2xx0 and 37xx models. Here’s the list, followed by a look at which older models remain…

As many as 83% of satnav users have been misled by their system, a survey by Confused.com found.

The poll of 2,000 drivers also revealed that women were more likely than men to get angry with their satnav, with drivers in the East Midlands exhibiting the most rage.

BaseCamp 4.1.0 for Windows has been released and with it has come Garmin Cloud Storage. Here’s what they have to say about it in the Garmin BaseCamp forum:
Every Garmin user will have 150MB of cloud storage to sync your data (waypoints, routes, tracks, etc.) between different computers. This should be fairly seemless (sic), just log in with your MyGarmin account, drag and drop data into your cloud storage device and it will be synced on the cloud so can access it if you run BaseCamp on a different machine.

What is a powered GPS mount?

I get asked what a powered GPS mount is so often that I decided to do a video about it. Basically, with a powered mount, you can leave the mount attached to the charging cable, get in your car, clip in the GPS and you’re good to go. Without a powered mount, you have to connect the cable to the GPS device each time you use it (if you want it to be charging).

Buying Used Garmin GPS Units- Transfer of registration
If you are currently looking at buying or selling your Garmin GPS unit please be aware of ownership/registration issues with Garmin. If the current owner has registered his GPS with Garmin then the new owner will have restrictions on upgrades until the registration has been changed. Once a unit is registered with Garmin it is associated with the owner. That owner can then upgrade the internal firmware and the maps whenever he likes. If he then sells the unit the new owner will not be able to do those upgrades until the registration with Garmin has been changed to the new owner. This is particularly important for those units that are supplied with the Map Source software. If the last owner has unlocked the software that means it has been registered with Garmin. The new owner can load the software but can not unlock it even with the unlock code because it is tied to a particular Garmin account of the last owner. Now, if none of this is important then you can use the GPS unit as your received it and it will get you from place to place just fine.

Can I load maps directly to an SD card during a map update?
The latest versions of Garmin Express and Garmin Map Updater offer the ability to install a map update directly to an SD card.

The SD card installation option will only appear when updating a compatible device that does not have sufficient internal memory for the largest allowable map region. When using the SD card installation option, critical files are loaded to the SD card so it must remain in the device after the update to ensure full functionality.

Pros and Cons for Buying Garmin LifeTime Map Update

Pros
1. Four fresh new maps updates per year
2. Notification of new maps when available
3. Firmware and support files download to device
4. The price of LifeTime maps has dropped to $54
5. Can be purchased by online map code or map update card

Cons
1. Older Garmin units may not have enough internal memory for new maps
2. For some GPS units you will need to purchase 4GB SD memory card
3. Down loading large maps files will take lots of time
4. This map update only can be used to update the preloaded maps that came installed on your Garmin device
5. The GPS must be registered in your name (INPORTANT)

Tips before purchase
1. Log onto your Garmin account and confirm the GPS is registered in your name
2. You will need a fast internet connection
3. 8GB of free space in your computer
4. Take time to read the comments from those that have purchased this product, it’s cheaper to learn from others mistakes then make them your self
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PKTFM8/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00

http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-n%C3%BCMaps-Lifetime-Update-America/dp/B002Q2TTIO/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1362263446&sr=1-2&keywords=garmin+numaps+lifetime+north+america+map+updates

Deal Breaker for me
1. My nuvi 1300 was purchased pre-owned and not registered in my name
2. The LifeTime map update is for US & Canada only, I must have Mexico maps included
3. The unit is 3 years old and needs a new battery before buying LifeTime map update
4. My StreetPilot 2730 has no SD Card slot and a slow CPU processor for today’s maps
5. My StreetPilot III can only use None-NT maps

Comments
-For me it may be better option to purchase a new GPS unit with lifetime maps and traffic and use the older units for backup.
-For those that have GPS unit with Europe and North American maps you can purchase LifeTime maps for these units.https://buy.garmin.com/...ID=33381&ra=true

Both Garmin and TomTom have navigation units for cars.
The cost for updating maps for a car unit is much higher (Approx. $300 USD)

You can save yourself some money by buying a GPS unit with
LifeTime maps and traffic of Canada, US and Mexico.
The unit can also be used on other cars if needed (Rental car).

TomTom partial coverage of Mexico 79%
Garmin partial coverage of Mexico 99%

PS
Not all Garmin units with North America maps include Mexico

Can dataless smartphones still use GPS navigation apps?
Cost-conscious wireless consumers have figured out that you don't need to pay a hefty monthly data fee to a wireless carrier to still enjoy many of the apps and functionality found on smartphones.

Garmin Maps | Cloning Method: Install a Map Update Directly to the SD Card.

Garmin Express and GarminMapUpdater include methods for installing maps to a SD card for most, but not all devices. The cloning procedure described in this FAQ works for those devices not supported by the Garmin programs, namely the nuvi 3xx, 5x0, 6xx, 8x0, 8x5 and 5000 series (and perhaps others).

1. There are some other advantages to using the cloning method. These include:
You can perform the map update process without affecting your device. If something
goes wrong with the update, you still have a working GPS with the old map.

2. The map install process will be faster. This is because it installs through your
computer's card reader which is a much faster device than the USB port of your Garmin device.

3. If you keep multiple map versions on separate SD cards, you can easily test the new
map and revert back to a previous version with simple card swapping. SD cards are
cheap. Keep your old map SD card until you are sure the new map is OK.

This method will work with the older Garmin nuvi and zumo devices including the following model series.
nuvi: 2x0, 2x5, 3xx, 465, 5xx, 6xx, 7x0, 7x5, 8x0, 8x5, 5000
zumo: 450, 500, 550

2013 Garmin nuvi series traffic is ad-free
When Garmin introduced lifetime traffic in 2008, it came bundled with their units but was ad-supported. You can see an example in the screenshot below. Personally, I found the ads low-key, but they certainly annoyed lots of folks.

What do I do if my device doesn't support the SD card feature during the Garmin Express map update?
It may not be possible to load the entire map update to some Garmin GPS devices using Garmin Express. As map updates increase in detail, they also increase in size and some devices do not have enough internal memory to store the entire update.
If the device cannot fit the entire map update and is not given the option to load directly to a SD card during the update,1 the maps can be installed to the computer and sent to a SD or microSD data card (please refer to the manual to see which card is right for the device) via Garmin MapInstall.

Start the map update using Garmin Express
  1. At the "Select a Region" prompt, click Continue
  2. Click the drop-down list at the bottom left of the window
  3. Click Device and Computer
  4. Select a region from the list to install to the internal memory of the Garmin (The largest map region will be installed to the computer)
  5. Click Continue

Garmin nuvi traffic symbols
I’m not sure how many folks actually take the time to review Garmin’s traffic symbol legend. When you’re fighting traffic probably isn’t the best time to do it, and it’s not that simple to find the legend either.

First of all you have to have the traffic receiver connected and receiving, so there’s no way to try it in the comfort of your living room. And then you have to find it (Apps > Traffic > Menu > Legend on the newest models). So to make things easier for you, I’ve compiled them all here…
