You take the pump price of Magna (9.12)and multiply by liters in a gallon (3.78) then divide by the days exchange rate.(11.76).....

9.12 x 3.78=34.47 pesos divided by 11.76=$2.93 per gallon in USD.........

I'm occasionally in the greater Seattle area, and put maybe 600 miles per year on a car I keep up north. Being a loyal Costco fan be I along the shores of Lake Chapala or in Seattle (and being cheap) I can tell you that in January the price was $3.119 and yesterday the next time I filled up which is always at the Seattle Costco store, I paid $3.779 per gallon. Yet when driving to Costco I saw some prices at S4.149.

Well I will be back soon and won't need to fill up another time until my next visit.

Okay I won't complain about the weather, which really sucks up here, but the meds and Doc visits are free, and I get (have) to go see all of my great relatives. And I choose to do so when it's almost too hot along the shores of Lake Chapala for this heat sissy. But I will admit the longer I live in Mexico, the more I love it and the less I go up North.

By the way the cool and beautiful rainy season started in a big way last night lakeside. In some areas there was heavy hail and in others two inches of rain. Check out chapalaweather.net

Changing the subject. Now, if only Apple will only come out with the GSM iPhone 5 (unlocked in Canada, of course) before I head back to paradise at the end of the month. Yes, I'm not only a heat sissy, but cheap as well :)

To me, Rolly has to be a real hero to live where he does. He talks about temperatures above 100 F. Many of us northerners, along the Pacific in WA and BC think anything much above 30 C (that's 86 F) is getting too hot. Guess that's why many of us head north during much of May and June

Yes, the cheaper USD prices reflect the Peso's drop in value due to reduced oil prices.

Magna now at $2.78 USD per gal.

It has been dropping from $3.03, to $2.83, $2.78 in USD terms...

At some point the monthly progammed increases should outweigh the peso weakness in the peso:dollar exchange rate, and the USD price should rise?

That's still less than three dollars per US gallon using a modest tipo de cambio. I "discovered" an additive called Chevron Techron. It seems to turn magna and premium into the equivalent of Shell, Chevron or Union 76 fuel. Really improved my fuel mileage.

Good observation.

Chevron fuel system cleaner with Techron or Chevron injector cleaner with Techron are 2 of the very best cleaners for fuel injection systems. They do a great job of cleaning fuel injectors and intake manifold ports and intake valves. The "Fuel System Cleaner" seems to have more Techron than the "Injector Cleaner".

The first bottle you run will generally dump a large amount of black gunk (months to years of previously accumulated organic acids and phenolics that accumulate on intake valves and injectors) into your oil => nasty oil** - and the exhaust doesn't smell nice during that first bottle-full.

Due to newly cleaned injectors spraying smaller finer more even fuel droplets, and better breathing intake ports, and smoother and higher intake flows, most people will notice both improved gas mileage (10% - 15% is not uncommon) and improved acceleration and more power. win, win, win

Background: Chevron Techron was the first US fuel system additive approved by BMW and Mercedes. The only other fuel cleaner that we have found that works as well is a BG product that costs $14 vs $7 for Techron. Techron removes more gunk than 4 bottles of cheap injector cleaners.

]Background:
Mexican gasoline from Pemex does not burn as cleanly as US gasoline, it does not have the additives and detergents that Shell and other major brands contain, and Pemex gas seems to have higher RVP (Reid Vapor Pressure) values than US warm weather gasolines (making it more volatile - but having a lower energy content per liter).

**For all these reasons, we find that we have to run a bottle of Techron roughly every 5 tankfuls of gas. Since 5 tankfulls corresponds roughly to an oil change period, we add the bottle of Techron for the last tankful before the oil change. Add the bottle before filling the tank, and then drive the vehicle to less than 1/4 tank remaining. (If you refill with gas before 1/4 tank, it dilutes out the Techron => poorer cleaning). By doing it this way, you dump 2,000 miles of accumulated partial combustion gunk into your old oil, which you then change. This is also environmentally friendlier, because the black gunk in the oil raises tailpipe hydrocarbon emissions - and by washing the gunk into the oil just before changing minimizes the amount of time you drive around with gunky acidic oil - less pitting of engine parts by the organic acids. win win win

A fellow I reached at Chevron tech support claimed the two Chevron additives contained the same formula. He also went on to say that adding a bottle to 16 gallons of gasoline just as the directions on the bottle suggests, will make a tank of fuel have 16 times more techron than Chevron pump fuel. On a trip to Acapulco my little car got horrible mileage, 19 mpg, shuddering and missing. After 20 miles with doped gasoline the jerking stopped and on the way home the mileage went back to normal 26 mpg. It dropped to 19 for almost a thousand miles. It's nice saving 20% on fuel. My Mitsubishi 3.0 supposedly is notorious for doing this. Nice to find Techron at Costco in Mexico.

Ouch, just bought gas this morning at $10.09 pesos per liter of Magna.
This converts to $2.92 USD per gallon at xe.com's $13.07 Pesos per USD.
Even small 10 centavo regular increases in the gasoline price squeezes some already-tight budgets.

Premium is at $10.79 pesos per liter.

The only reason to use premium is if your car has a high-compression engine as the octane prevents pre-ignition. My VW Crossfox has a high-compression engine of 1600cc. It needs premium else it will diesel on after the engine is turned off.

On the news last night, Pres. Calderón said he was surprised that anyone was surprised at the continuing 'gasolinazo'--the regular price increases. He went on to say that the increases would continue until regular unleaded gasoline is selling for 14 pesos the liter.

Remember that although the elections are July 1, Pres. Calderón is in office until December of this year.

For perspective, 14 pesos/liter comes out to about $4.07/gallon U.S. at 13 pesos/dollar. That, to me, is seemingly an astronomical figure for the rank and file Mexican populace to pay for fuel.

"....until December of this year." Of course it would take much longer than that for gas to rise from its present level to 14 pesos. Would it be reasonable to think that the new President could change the current monthly increases? If so, has this been a topic of political rhetoric?

Yes, darn it, $14 pesos per liter is closer to what I will be paying up North. In Seattle it's slightly higher and when in BC often it's even higher, especially on the "Big Island" where I often hang out (Vancouver Island). Oh well, my total mileage since the fall of 2000 is only 31 K in Mexico and another 30 K miles up north. Gosh over the last 11.8 years that works out to only (31K+30K)/11.8 or 5,170 miles (almost 8,300 Km) per year .

What's most embarrassing is that while the car up north does not have one dent, the car down south which is the same model of the same year (2001 Ford Explorer Sport) has more dents and scratches then one could imagine and 98% of those bumps and scratches are my fault.

I love your question Rick. The problem is, I keep on driving as if I were in the US. You know the streets are more narrow here etc. :) I have no serious dents, but just all kinds of small ones from trying to squeeze in between two cars etc, when trying to drive home on the back streets.

I have the same problem when walking. I used to always look straight ahead and not below where I was walking thinking that like in the US, everything was smooth.

I love Mexico. It's taking longer than normal to adjust :)

If you recall, when Pres. Calderón started raising gasoline prices each month, he said that he would continue to raise the price until it was on a par with the price of gasoline world-wide.

And yes, he only has 6.5 months remaining in office. Up until now, the price raises have been in centavos each month. If he truly expects to reach a price of 14 pesos/liter before he leaves office, he could do it easily--just up the ante each month by less than a peso.
