Hopefully this thread demostrates the variability of the 'tianguis' around the country...and why, they are likely to continue for some time to come.

Agreed. I happened to be in Patzcuaro one Tiangius day and in Mazamitla another. I enjoyed both.

Here in Ajijic, the prices are higher than in nearby tianguis in Jocotepec (the least expensive) and Chapala. We find the produce good and enjoy the wide variety of items available, though seldom find anything except food items that appeal to us. Haven't tried to find fun underware - maybe I'm missing something.

Our tiangius is a social event for both expats and Mexicans, though moreso for expats. The Mexicans tend to be serious shoppers and we are often just looking. I wouldn't go to the tianguis regularly, but enjoy it when I do. My wife wouldn't let me anyway. I came home with two great dogs several months ago after a tiangius visit to Anita's Animals book and cat giveaway stand.

From reading the various negative postings above, I feel that we are very fortunate here. The only experiences with losing money I have had were when people chased me down and gave me change that I had inadvertantly forgotten.

Drmike, if you live in or near Toluca, you must go to the tiaguis of Santiago Tiaguistenco, within 30 miles, southwest of Toluca. I first read about this Tuesday only market in a Diana Kennedy book. It was well worth the time, for a look and taste of traditional (and otherwise) Mexican fare. Get there early. It's a feast for the senses, and be brave, and try that tamal de sesos that I passed up, in favor of regular, but delicious tamales and barbacoa de borrego.

If wild mushrooms interest you, this is a great place to find them, during the rainy season, as well as fish (and possibly frogs), daubed with red chile paste and roasted whole in corn husks.
Sad to say, I didn't have a camera with me. :-(

Amen, Jennifer. With one exception: when I visit Patzcuaro I do go to their produce tianguis - Michoacan is apparently the kitchen garden of Mexico and they do have some wonderful, fresh, and varied vegetables - just like Wal Mart.

True, Georgia; although it's more convenient to shop at the new Mercado Soriana of Pátzcuaro, Costco and Soriana, the produce is generally inferior to what we find and buy in the mercado.

I have not yet been. I inquired here among friends and neighbors about tianguis in Hermosillo, as I was advsied here, and discovered that they are not very popular among my friends and neighbors. There are two, at least two in the area of town where I live, both held on Saturday's and they are both almost smack-dab in the middle of the heavy construction that is occurring on Blvd. Solidaridad.

I could walk there from here but with all that construction, I don't think it would be smart to try to do that. And with temperatures recently around 105'F it would be no leisurely stroll.

People say there is very little in the way of fruits, vegetables, meat, etc. at these tianguis. And that most of what is there does not look like fresh stuff from the fields; more like old stuff bought at the various super markets around town, or possibly from the fruit and vegetable wholesale place that is also in this same general area. The rest of the fare is apparently low-end clothing and goodies from the USA and some used stuff. I get the impression that it is not the type of place for a kaffee-klatsch that others have described here, nor a good place to find fresh fruit and vegetables.

Opinion seems to be that better, fresher fruits and vegetables are available in the better supermarkets like Soriana Plus and WalMart.

I will still go as soon as the construction is done. But probably not any time soon.
