I had a need for one. Don't laugh :) I was writing a column called Tech Talk in those days for the Guadalajara Reporter. And I needed something to write about. I was able to relate it to things technical by saying if you had a CURP it would be easier to get your cell phone registered.
And strangely before I got my official CURP ID, immigration created a much shorter alpha-numeric ID that they called my CURP. And every year when I renew my immigration papers I give the officials a copy of my real CURP ID. They never use it. They keep on entering the much shorter artificially produced ID they came up with years ago. Who knows. :)
