You really believe that? I can tell you I know and regularly talk to hundreds of people per month (just active in an active club) and none of them are thinking about Mexico at all. And that's in a city that's a third Hispanic. I'd say that 90% of Americans don't give a rat's pitooey about Mexico so if it's intended as a "distraction" it's a pretty ineffective and useless one.
That is my experience as well. The only folks who I know give more than a passing thought to Mexico are the immigrants from that country that I am assisting in practicing their English skills through the public library program in Austin. They maintain contact with their families there and, frankly, I give their opinions about safety and other societal issues more credence that what I read in the US press or, MexConnect for that matter.
