After ten years in Mexico, I now live in Austin, Texas but continue to speak Spanish on an almost daily basis given the large Latino population. I shop at Fiesta Market which caters to that demographic group. Despite numerous learning opportunities, I continue to make the mistake of assuming that everyone there who speaks Spanish is Mexican. Although it was not deliberate, I have nevertheless insulted folks from Honduras, Guatamala, and El Salvador by my errors. It is not as bad as assuming that they are all undocumented but I can and should do better.
