The recent United Nations International Conference on Financing for Development (see Business Mexico, April and May 2002) put Monterrey and the state of Nuevo León on the global map. One of the wealthiest states in the country, Nuevo León is known for its industrial parks and deeply-rooted business culture. The state is home to deserts and mountains, both under fire from urbanization and industrialization. One of the most interesting of Mexico's northern border states, you'll find visitor information, business connections and other valuable resources about Mexico's Northern Star on the Web.

EL NORTE

/5 Stars

This Monterrey-based newspaper has been lauded for high standards and graphics, and its website carries these to a new level. The Spanish-language site boasts a clean layout and offers superb content from business news to Monterrey headlines. For anyone interested in Nuevo León, this is one of the must-reads and a recommended bookmark.

CINTERMEX

/5 Stars

With nearly 1,100 events each year, Monterrey's CINTERMEX Convention and Exhibition Center receives over 1 million visitors a year in its colossal 64,000 square meter facility. The bilingual (English-Spanish) website provides a plethora of resources aimed at business travelers and conference planners. The home page showcases the ever-changing events of the week. The events page, www.cintermex.com.mx/eventos.html, is updated regularly. Another highlight is a map, www.cintermex.com.mx/location.html, also available in PDF format.

MEXICAN HISTORY MUSEUM

One of Mexico's newest museums, the Museo de Historia Mexicana is also one of the country's finest. The Spanish-language website is as detailed as the museum, providing details about the current exhibitions and the featured piece of the month. Additional links offer details about hours of operation and fees, and encourage guests to become a "friend of the museum." Visitors can also take courses and informative field trips, extending the museum's reach both beyond its walls and website. www.museohistoriamexicana.org.mx/cursos.htm

NUEVO LEÓN'S UNDERSECRETARIAT OF TOURISM

/5 Stars

This bilingual (English-Spanish) website lavishes its attention on Monterrey, providing traveler's tips and practical information such as the current weather forecast. Bonuses are the maps of the state of Nuevo León, downtown Monterrey and the Monterrey metro. The site does provide a glimpse of the state's small towns and parks for those willing to make the journey, www.monterrey-mexico.com/ingles/recorridos.html.

OTHER NUEVO LEÓN WEBSITES

NUEVO LEÓN STATE GOVERNMENT

www.nuevoleon.gob.mx

Like many state portals, this website takes too long to load. No doubt, the site looks much better on a CD-ROM, but it should be much faster to load on the Web.

GUÍA MONTERREY

www.guiamonterrey.com

Covers local businesses from Abogados (Lawyers) to Zapatos (Shoes). The site does not appear to have been updated in the past year.

PRONATURA

The Monterrey-based chapter of this environmental group focuses on northeastern Mexico. The Spanish-language website, unlike the local ecosystem, is quite barren.
