GUADALAJARA
Local websites reveal that Guadalajara
is a lot more than just tequila and mariachis.
Guadalajara has always been a popular destination thanks to its lively music, beautiful museums and parks, and numerous business conventions. Even with its six million residents, status as the second-largest city in Mexico, and well-deserved reputation as a bustling commercial and industrial center, the Jalisco state capital has also preserved much of its colonial charm. And while fully exploring Guadalajara's mariachi and charro heritage-synonymous with Mexico's cultural identity-demands a pilgrimage to the birthplace of both of these traditions, travelers and entrepreneurs alike can find useful information about the metropolis online.
Vive Guadalajara
vive.guadalajara.gob.mx/
/5 Stars
This is Guadalajara City Hall's official website, and it achieves its stated purpose of promoting tourism attractions and services in the metropolitan area. It is a model site, with a bilingual guide offering up-to-date references and resources on entertainment options, shopping, lodging, and even city universities. There are few other municipal websites that offer such detail. Clicking "events of the week"( vive.guadalajara.gob.mx/Eventos/Eventosi.asp) actually brings up a current review of local offerings. Likewise, a photo gallery shows off the best of "La Vida Tapatía." Visitors seeking cultural venues and business travel will find an abundant treasury of useful resources. The only thing missing is an interactive bulletin board, but at least the Web hosts answer their emails!

/5 Stars
One of Mexico's oldest weekly English-language newspapers has established a beachhead on the Web. The Reporter has established a reputation for covering not only Guadalajara but Pacific Mexico as well. For example, sections of the paper and website cover Puerto Vallarta and Lake Chapala in depth. The website reserves timely materials for online subscribers (at a cost of US$30 a year)- www.guadalajarareporter.com/subs.cfm-but there is plenty for first-time visitors to access. Must-visit sections of the site include information on the city's mariachi festival and city news ( www.guadalajarareporter.com/metro.cfm). For readers contemplating a trip or relocation to the area, the site offers an excellent introduction to the region.
