Wowee! Just learned today that (barring unforeseen problems) the presidents of both Mexico and the US have agreed to come to the big bridge bash on April 14, 2000! Gee, what a way to get the attention of the news media (and of course, since both presidents are at the end of their terms, well, . . .) and *even* George W. Bush is gonna be there too! (attending as governor of TX, naturally) I wonder if this will be as fun as the 50th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge was . . .Renee

That is very useful news . . . do you know if the bridge will be informally open for traffic before that date? I am planning to drive through there just a couple of days before, and would like to avoid old bridge #1 if at all possible...Gracias!

Maurice--
As far as I know, the bridge will be open for traffic as of Saturday, 15 April. At that time, ALL commercial traffic will be routed to either bridge 3 (Columbia Bridge) OR Bridge 4 (World Trade Bridge), leaving car traffic to bridges 1 and 2 (2 is the bridge at the end of IH35) and pedestrian traffic (as it is now) to Bridge 1. Be advised, however, strange things are happening at Bridge 1 on the Mexican side. It looks like they will be blocking the first block or so of Avenida Guerrero (street which Bridge 1 opens onto) on a regular basis on the weekends--to make the area safer for pedestrian tourists. Lots of changes are in the works at that Bridge site. I can't speak for Bridge 2, but if I get a chance, I'll try to use it this weekend.
