An interesting option for a more unusual vacation in Oaxaca is to look into renting one of the State Tourism Dept.'s new "Ecotourism Units." The State operates nine "Tourist Yu'u" bungalows scattered throughout the state. The newly constructed units contain a full kitchen, dining/living room, full bath, two bedrooms. Units rent for the amazingly affordable rates of $60 pesos (two persons); $100 pesos (4-6 persons).

Five Star

CAMINO REAL OAXACA (Formerly the Stouffer Presidente)

This 16th century former convent is a grand property, meticulously restored, yet retaining all its former grace. Now declared an historical monument, the hotel's Spanish Baroque architecture and authentic colonial mementos take guest back in time. Long tiled hallways with fading original wall frescoes lead to several sun-splashed courtyards, and flower-filled patios. Pool area (with heated pool) is particularly lovely. Two restaurants serving regional specialties. There are three bars, and once a week the hotel hosts a regional "guelaguetza" buffet. The 91 rooms and suites are generally large, some have balconies, with high, beamed ceilings, stucco walls, king or double beds, and large, tiled combination baths. Known more as a business traveler's hotel, the Fortín is on the outskirts of the city near the Victoria. It is a six-story tower that stands behind the hotel's small kidney- shaped pool. 100 rooms have tiled floors with carpet insets, TV, tiled shower-only baths. Casa Colonial stands in a pleasant residential neighborhood about seven blocks from the zócalo. The Casa is a large home built in the 19th century by an American mining engineer. There are 14 spacious rooms divided into seven singles and seven doubles with Mexican furnishings, original local art, and a private veranda facing the lovely gardens. Double rooms offer private baths and singles offer shared bath. Rooms contain no telephone or TV, but maid service is provided daily. Casa Colonial is owned by an American anthropologist and her husband who purchased the property in 1993 after sending their own groups there for years. Specialized tours available for groups of ten or more.

With 36 quaint rooms in colonial modern style. Located just off the main square, this beautifully designed hotel offers telephone, color cable TV and ceiling fans in all rooms. Ideal for those wanting a small hotel in a great location. For the traveler who wants to be in the center of Oaxacan social life, but not right on the square. The hotel has a café in the lobby and is associated with the restaurant Terra Nova, located right on the square.


Hotel with 94 rooms, each with TV and telephone, is located 5 minutes (by taxi) or a longish walk from the main square. Swimming pool surrounded by gardens and lawn. A great budget choice for families with small children. This hotel is surrounded by a high wall keeping little ones in and all others out. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Restaurant next to outdoor pool. The staff here speaks very little English.


Facing the main square and actually touching the city's cathedral, the Marqués is ideally situated and an excellent value property. The five-story exterior is accented by soft green stone with lacy iron balconies. Striking lobby has marble with wood accents and colorful oil paintings. Tiled staircase leads to second floor courtyard with potted plants and wrought iron lined hallways. 95 rooms have white stucco walls, tile floors, large shower-only baths, and simple wood frame twin beds. This modern colonial-style hotel is located just three blocks from the zocalo. It features 56 rooms facing an interior courtyard. Guest rooms have ceramic tile floors, simple, tasteful decor, and shower-only baths. Cafeteria-style restaurant, lobby bar.
